Control board has gone bad....

What happens is the defrost is controlled electronically from a circuit board, when this goes bad, the freezer quits defrosting, and freezes the fans that circulate air through the fridge side of things.

To check this, unplug the entire fridge, leave the freezer open, wait for it to defrost a bit, if this causes the fridge to start cooling again when you plug it back in, then its the defrost. You should also see ice crystals on the back of the freezer just under the icemaker.

SOURCE: Fridge temp set to 38 is blinking,,reset unit

I had a similar problem, paid a technician $90 to tell me to defrost the entire unit for 15-20 hours, and now it works like new. It is supposed to self defrost, but with poor circulation in the freezer (simply caused by too much stuff in there) the unit frosts up. This caused a rising temp in the freezer leading to inconsistent temps.

Anyone reading this with a similar issue, save your money and defrost it overnight. You should see a pool of water in the bottom of the freezer after defrost if this was the problem.

Is the fan blowing in the freezer section? Also, check to see if you have airflow thru the damper (vent) in the frig section.

I have a westing house BJ414 and dont seen to be getting much air flow into the fridge section? the fan is runnong aand the freezer is reaching temp?

maybe too much food in top part of fridge. Cold air comes from top of fridge near light. Can you feel cold air coming from there? Put a fridge thermometer in the top section-they only cost a few $ from kmart etc -the temp should be 2-4 deg C. My thermostat is turned to warmest setting and its still in that range. Does fridge cycle on and off every 1/2hr or so? If it runs nonstop, it may be the freezer section is all frosted up, probably coz the defrost timer has stopped working or else the defrost element has burned out. Both can be easily replaced by you.

Fridge section is too cold causing food to freeze

Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

Fridge freezer over heating and is not cooling fridge section

It is normal for the middle strip to be hot. Did you check the temp setting in the fridge section?
Also - you might check for blockage in the bottom. Excessive dirt/dog hair can block the air flow.
Good luck
