TUNING
This DVD+VCR is equipped with a frequency synthe-
sized tuner capable of receiving up to 181 channels.
These include VHF channels 2-13, UHF channels
14-69 and CATV channels 1-125.
Auto Channel Programming
1. Choose the SOURCE SELECT option, then use
b / B to select TUNER.
Use b / B to switch among TUNER, LINE1, and LINE2.
2. Choose the AUTO CHANNEL SET option, then
use b / B to find channels.
• The tuner will automatically cycle through all available
channels (TV/CATV) in the area and place them in
the tuner's memory.
•After the AUTO CHANNEL SET is complete, the
TUNING menu will hide and return to the TV screen
automatically.
3. Make sure the TUNING BAND is set appropriately
(TV or CATV).
• TV : If you are using a standard antenna to receive
channels.
•CATV : If you are using basic cable to receive
channels.
Press the menu button on TV Use the ch +/- and Volume +/- to move within the menu Go to SETUP Go to TV/CATV and the select TV This will take it off of the Cable settings and put it back on Antenna
You can go here to see if you can get a new factory remote TV Parts Universal TV Stands DLP Chips ShopJimmy or you can get a Harmony remote that will never go obsolete no matter how many times you change Tv's in the future or add components to your system
the tv doesn't need to know that the signal is coming from a dish, so the use of catv while using direct tv should be okay. it seems that the problem may be with where you are making the connection from the direct tv box. plug it in where you would a cable box cable.
There is an option in the menu which changes the tuner from cable to antenna (off-air or broadcast) mode. On many/most late VCRs, you must have the remote box to access these functions.
Old VCRs (15 years +) might have had a switch to make this change.
This is the chanel set up options I see on the online manual:
- CHANNEL SETUP -
ADD/DELETE(DTV)
AUTO PRESET CH(DTV)
AUTO PRESET CH(TV/DTV)
AUTO PRESET CH(CATV)
! CATV takes approx. 50min.
To set up for over the air broadcast that local channels now have in HDTV, you will select AUTO PRESET CH(DTV). You will have to disconnect cable for this option; however, the cable company will send local channels over the cable.
Bottom line, if you have cable, use it, it will most likely still deliver the best signal.
So coonect cable and use this option:
AUTO PRESET CH(CATV)
Oh, and the reason it takes so long is because there are more channels to scan with cable then with the local over the air channels.
According to the manual, follow the steps below to program channels on your Quasar VV8220 TV:
1) Hold the CHANNEL MEMORY Button on your remote in and press the 1 key
(a box will come up where you can shift between TV & CATV --
you will want to be on CATV (for cable channels).
2) Press the 4 key which will change from TV to CATV -- make sure it is
on CATV or if it is already on CATV, press the 5 key.
3) Press the 4 key (the auto set guide will engage and go through the channels).
I own this remote. Here are the instructions.
1 turn on your tv or catv 2 aim remote at tv or catv 3 while holding tv or catv button press 0 to 9 last ch 100/ent or channel 4 release both buutons when tv or catv changes channel. note press tv or vcr or catv button first to select desired function
I have a Cable EZ remote with the instructions o the back. See if this will help you (I wrote it below exactly as written on the remote):

How to set up the remote controller:

The remote has a label with the model number AWV351RC and an FCC ID of NGVAWV35XRC. Made in Taiwan.
Hope this helps. I am missing the operating manual that came with the unit, so if anyone has a copy you can scan and post, it would be appreciated.
