Have replaced carb, plug, and fuel tank assembly incl. fuel filter. Fuel does not flow. Engine won't start, even if I spray carb cleaner in the carb.

Fuel tank assembly and carb were both very easy to replace, but either I did something wrong replacing them or a replacement part is bad. Now the fuel won't flow when I pump the bubble. I hear air wheeze when I pump it. Did I get a bad carb or some gasket bad or something?

SOURCE: Replaced fuel lines and pressing the primer pump does not feed gasoline to the car.

Sounds like you have the fuel lines switched around. The fuel line closest to the primer bulb will be the shortest line. It only goes 1" or so into the tank. The other line will be the longest line, and sometimes the smallest in diameter of the two depending on the size of your trimmer, and must rest comfortably on the bottom of the tank.

SOURCE: Primer button on homelite gas trimmer

It's possibly the filter, can't help there. I would check for a split line or loose connection between the tank and bulb and even splits in the bulb itself.

SOURCE: replace fuel lines bubble will

This is an ongoing issue for users, and rightfully so. Small diameter line out of fuel tank (has filter in-tank on end) connects to the side of the carburetor that has the fuel pump....that is the cover without the hole in it. Other larger diameter fuel line out of tank connects to the longer nipple on the external purge/primer bulb. The bulb "pulls" fresh fuel from the fuel tank to the carb and then out of the carb to itself, where it then pushes any air/old fuel back into the fuel tank. The remaining larger diameter fuel line in this setup goes from the metering chamber (has cover with writing on it and a vent-hole) side of the carburetor to the smaller nipple on the purge/primer bulb. Years ago on 2-stroke trimmers, primers were not even used,...you choked the carb with a slide lever and gravity let fuel enter the carb from above...a few pulls, a "pop"...slide it off of choke and away you went.
If the purge/primer bulb is on top of the carb...small line from carb body to small hole in tank with filter. Larger diameter line goes from the bulb on the fuel pump side of the carb to the larger hole in the fuel tank where the line is held in place with a nylon nipple connector that keeps the line from pulling out of the tank

I have a Devilbiss GB500 Generator with a Brigg engine model number 19E412 Type 1131 E1 . I choke to strart but only runs for a couple of secs and then stops. If I try right away to start, it won't but...

Hi I am Kelly,
I read that you did a carb cleaning. Remove the fuel float bowl again. In the area of the float bowl nut threads is the main fuel jet orifice and fuel tube. Break off a toothpick and use the BLUNT end up inside the threaded area in a twisting manner to wipe any debis from the main fuel orifice. Also if you remove the air filter and look in the throat of the carb. There is a brass tube at the 6 o'clock position. Spray that with carb cleaner and watch for carb cleaner to come out of the main fuel orifice in the threaded area. Once you have done this youshould check fuel flow. Get a spary paint can lid and place it under the carb / float. Turn on the fuel and watch fuel flow. It should fill the spray paint can lid in about 10 seconds. If you do not have good fuel flow then you will need to inspect the main fuel supply at the carb connection. It should really be a rapid rate from the fuel hose coming form the tank. Low flow here you must inspect the tank exit port, fuel shut off and any in line filters. Good flow here but low flow under the float... you need to spray carb cleaner UP beside the float needle with the mainfuel hose removed to get any debris out of the needle and seat area. Then spray from the main fuel line connection DOWN through the float needle and seat. Reconnect the main fuel ine and test flow. Once you have good fuel flow re-install the float bowl and attempt a start.

If you have the same result... read this:
IMPORTANT: The engine is equipped with a low oil level sensor. Make sure the oil level is serviced fully. If there is a low oil level condition (or bad sensor) it will shut off the ignition.
It is quite possible that your oil level is high enough to get an engine start but as soon as oil is circulated in the engine the sensor is activated. If you suspect a low oil level sensor problem disconnect ONE wire from the sensor and test unit again.

After doing ALL of the above you still have the problem just respond here and I will continue to help you.

EB5000 been sitting 6 months, have fuel stabilizer in gas. Will start, but won't stay running. I sprayed starter fluid and it kept running until I stopped spraying the fluid.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

If the generator has sat for some time the fuel in the float bowl will turn into a varnish like substance (shellac). The residual fuel in the carb will have to be removed. You do this by removing the fuel solenoid (or bowl nut) which ever one youhave that secures the float bowl to the carb. Then take a screw driver and remove the main fuel orifice and remove the debris from the main fuel orifice. Clean the orifice with carb cleaner. DO NOT push anything into the hole! Also spray the brass tube that the main fuel jet screws into with carb cleaner. You should see carb cleaner being sprayed into the throat of the carb.

While the fuel float bowl is removed get a spray can lid and hold it under the carb float. Turn on the fuel selector and the fuel should completely fill the spray can lid in 8 - 10 seconds. If you do not have this amount of fuel flow you need to remove the main fuel line from the carb and re-check fuel flow. If the flow is good here then use carb cleaner in the float needle area to force any debris back out the fuel manufold connection that is now open because you removed the fuel line. If you still do not have fuel flow then check for debris in the fuel tank exit port, the fuel filter, the sediment bowl under the fuel shut off assembly.
Once again with the spray can lid under the float you should have fuel flow anytime the fuel selector is on and the float level is down. It should shut off fuel just as it reaches level. Any other result and the float and float needle will have to be removed, cleaned and inspected for debris.

Make sure to re-install the main fuel orifice in the treaded area that secures the float bowl in place and.re-connect the main fuel line to the fuel manifold / carb fuel inlet connection

If the engine has a fuel solenoid hook it up and and see of it is working as you turn the key / engine switch on and off before you reinstall the float bowl. You make have to hold the case of the solenoid against the engine to make a ground AWAY from any residual fuel for testing. I.e. don't burn up your generator.
Re-install the fuel float bowl and test the engine. It should now work just fine.
The above steps are successful most of the time on generatosr that have sat idle for an extended period. I have been working on generators large and small for over 40 years.

To much fuel! Boggs out! crimp fuel lin e to starve engine of gas and runs great?

Either the float level is too high or there is debris in the float needle seat. This causes the carb to overflow while running. The fix is:
- Remove the main fuel line with the fuel selector off of you have one.... or pull the line and plug it off / keep the end above the fuel tank then
- Remove the float bowl from the carb.
- Pull the float pin and remove the float and float needle (INSPECT float needle rubber tip for damage or dirt... any damage replace float needle and seat.)
- Spray carb cleaner into the main fuel supply hose / manfold fitting on the carb. Your removing any debris that night be in the float needle seat area
- Spray carb cleaner in all open fuel jet passages without dis-assembly of the carb.
- Reinstall the float needle and float (Float pin too!)
BRIEFLY reconnect the main fuel line
GENTLY lift the float to level.... (Incoming fuel flow MUST stop) Lower float.. (fuel must flow)
If the fuel flow does not stop with the float level.. you must replace the float needle snd seat. After needle and seat replacement if fuel still does not stop with the float level the tab where the float needle is will have to be bent UP no more than 0.010 at a time and then re-test flor fuel stoppage with float level. Adjust tab as necessary to get the float level correct.
- re-assemble carb
- test... running and static.

Old '87 ranger been sitting in folks yard few years. fires up fine, but spits and sputters going down the road

Old fuel in tank, fuel filter clogged, plugged/clogged carb. or fuel injectors.

1. Drain fuel from tank and replace with new fuel with SeaFoam or Lucas

2. Repace fuel filter

3. With engine running at a high idle and air cleaner off, spray or pour carb/fuel injection cleaner into carb/fuel injectors.

If problems persist, check plug wires for cracks and/or breaks. Pull spark plugs checking for fouling.

I have a 2001 Suzuki Maurader 250 - we bought it used and cannot get it to start - we have had it running but the next day it will not start. |We have changed the oil, plugs, cleaned the carb and now it...

Drain the carb with the gas valve on the tank turned off. Now turn the valve back on and see if gas again begins to flow out of the float bowl. If no gas drains with the valve open then remove the fuel line at the carb and check to see that fuel flows freely through the fuel line. If gas flows freely out of the fuel line then the float needle is stuck closed or trash is plugging up the needle jet assembly. If so, remove the float bowl and free up the needle. Use spray carb cleaner and the little "straw" that comes with the can to direct the spray into the float needle fitting. Fuel should flow when the float is down and stop flowing when the float is lifted. Pull a spark plug and ground the metal against the cylinder. Check for spark. If there is no spark then check the operation of the kill switch on the side stand and the handlebar. Use a multimeter to check the switches. Get fresh gas and install an in-line fuel filter to keep any trash out of the carb. Clean the air filter. Please rate my answer. Thanks.

Replaced all lines (2) plus bulb and still can't prime blower.. if I put gas in spark plug hole runs fine.. even tried leaving off the filter in tank. thanks

I am under the assumption the primer bulb is atop the carburetor. There are check valves under the bulb in the primer base assembly of these carbs. Sometimes, the valves stick and sometimes they go bad completely. There are very small and for all practical purposes unserviceable, however...you can try this...pull the fuel lines off of the carb and spray WD-40 into the brass inlet and outlet. Remove the primer bulb again and liberally spray some WD onto the top of the primer base assembly...this being done in hopes of freeing up a sticky check valve. If you have extra or old fuel lines, hook them to the carb...inject WD-40 and work the bulb to attempt to move the lubricant back and forth out of the carb. Sometimes this works, sometimes not..if valves are bad. There are replaceable parts and kits for the primer base available on the manufacturers websites. The primer bulb does not have to be completely full of fuel to allow the engine to run, but the base assembly can cause problems in fuel flow to and from the carb and even mimic a flooding condition. Don't use carb cleaner and dont soak the carb in any,. Try this and post back if needed.
Please vote on this solution.

A coleman generator 6875 won't start please give

Dump ALL old fuel out of tank, you might have got a clog in the fuel line, carburator, fuel valve. Remove carb bottom Sediment bowl then spray Carb cleaner thru the gas inlet AT the carb 3-4 secs CAUTION: KEEP YOUR HEAD BACK.. that cleaner hurts if you get it in your eyes... and NEVER SPRAY A HOT ENGINE (np with yours tho no start) Refill tank with NEW fuel (or strained at least if emergency remote repair) Place a suitable catch container over gas inlet line to carb (at carb) open fuel valve chk for fuel FLOWING (no dripping) into container. replace fuel line to carb start as normal
if not firing still chk that spark plug, might need cleaning now that rest is ok.

84 gsx750se starting problem!

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

PRI setting allows fuel to flow from the tank to the carbs whether engine is running or not while ON requires that there is vacuum (engine running) for the fuel cut-off valve to allow fuel to flow (safety feature).

To determine if fuel is reaching the carbs, loosen the drain screw at the bottom of the carb's bowl. Fuel should leak out of the drain hose. For safety reasons, ensure no open flame and the fuel is collected in a suitable container. Another that could be tried is to turn off fuel from tank, temporarily remove the drain hoses from each of the carbs and spray the inside of the bowl through the drain hose nipple using carb cleaner. It would be easier to use the narrow tubelike nozzle that comes with the carb cleaner.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Yamaha 06' V-star 650 idle prolbem!

Fuel filter is located near the fuel shutoff valve within three inches. It is inline between the shutoff valve and the fuel pump (towards tank).

The fuel circuit is: Tank/Fuel Pump/Fuel Filter/Fuel Shut-off Valve/Carbs.

You first step is to check for fuel delivery to the filter. Make sure the bike is cool and no iginition sources are nearby. Disconnect the inlet line at the filter and turn key on and crank engine (to trigger fuel pump.) Do not try and start at this time (choke off).

If fuel is adequate to the filter, check the filter by blowing through it, it should easily pass air. Replace filter if questionable.

Next reconnect the fuel lines and remove float bowl drain plugs in the back of the carbs (2 per carb). If with key on and cranking fuel pours out of these ports then you probably have clogged fuel jets. If not then the float bowl needles / pipes could be plugged with varnish from dried fuel. You can try spraying carb cleaner into the fuel inlet to clear the varnish and then retest. Careful not to spray carb cleaner on yourself (wrap straw with a rag).

If you have good fuel flow to the carbs and bowls you probably have varnish plugging the jets. You should remove the carbs and clean them thoroughly.

Hope this helps,

Kal
