I did not have water hooked up but the red light indicates that the filter should be changed, why?? The fridge is 6 months old and sounds like a dryer through my wall, why??

Filter indicator : The filter Indicator will be Red when you have used your water filter for 6 months, Reset the indicator (it will be Blue) after replacing the filter by holding the "Alarm/Hold 3 sec for Filter Reset" button for 3 seconds.
I am wondering about the hose you shoved in and the leak stopped. Is the hose you pushed in buckled where it hooks on or is there a buckled spot where the water comes out of the fridge. Just a guess.
Resetting the water filter indicator light can also be found in the user manual for your SRS580DW Refrigerator User Manual page 8 The water filter indicator initially lights up green. Press the ICE TIMER and ICE MODE buttons at the same time for about three seconds to reset the water filter installation date. • The green light changes to orange after five months to indicate that you should soon change the water filter. It changes to red after an additional one month (six months after the water filter was changed or installed) to indicate that you must change the water filter. • If you wish to turn off the filter indicator lamp or the filter is not connected, press the ice timer & ice mode button simultaneously for 5 seconds. If you wish to turn on the filter indicator lamp again, press the ice timer & ice mode button simultaneously for 3 seconds. The filter/water system is designed to change colors after 6 calendar months, the system does not count the flow of water (unless you have the smart valve unit that measures water). Either way, you can either reset the filter by holding the filter button for 5-10 seconds or replace the filter and hold the filter button then.
Good luck
The light stays on, actually. RF265/6/7 models have a blue LED water filter indicator that remains lit in normal mode. After about 5 months [on a 300 gal. filter] the LED indicator will turn pink and then red at about 6 months. Derived from RF266 users manual, hope this helps.
TRY to unplug for 5 minutes and replug it back in that should clear the code and if it does not repost a comment it here to fix it. Hopes this
fix the problem. Avid101
This is the indicator that suggests that it is time to change the water filter.
After 5 months of operation, the indicator shows as light pink. At this point, it is a reminder to aquire a replacement filter,
After 6 months of operation, the indicator turns to red. This is now the suggested time to change the indicator.
Even if you aren't using the water, the filter indicator still lights as this is simply a timer and does not measure water flow through the filter.
To reset the indicator, press and hold the Fridge and Power Cool buttons at the same time for 3 seconds. These 2 buttons are on the right side of the display panel. They are the first 2 buttons to the right of this indicator.
Printed on the panel, there is a line connecting the buttons with a miniature of the indicator in the middle. The instruction to hold the buttons for 3 seconds is printed below the buttons.
Because all Samsung refrigerators use a microprocessor to control them, the timing is precisely as given. Since people usually aren't that precise, you may find yourself holding the buttons for 4 or 5 'seconds' before the indicator changes.
Samsung has used a filter indicator like this since the first full-size Samsung refrigerator wa introduced in the United States in Fall 2002. Though the time has varied slightly between models and the 2-button combination has varied even more, the basic process applies to nearly every model that had an ice filter.
yes it is. as long as there is still water coming out from the dispenser.
the red light only indicates that it is about time to replace the filter. could be 6 months old. this is controlled by time, so check your water pressure at the dispenser, if it is still strong, then you could still use it .
depending on your condition, some filters would be clogged already even if the light is still green and there is no more water coming out of your dispenser.
