There can be plenty of different problems which can cause this issue. So it's very hard to tell without seeing your macbook in person. You can find different guides though. I don't know enough about batteries but when I had issues with a screen I read macbook screen repair guide and it helped me a lot.
Before you start reinstalling Mac OS X, try the following:
1). Restart the computer while holding down the "D" key. This will put it into diagnostics mode. Run the First Aid repair and see what happens. If it finds errors, keep running it over and over until it says the drive appears to be OK. (If it continues to produce errors after 3 or 4 runs, take it to an Apple store or authorized Apple repair center.)
2). Restart the computer while holding down COMMAND-OPTION-P-R. This zaps the PRAM, in which many persistent system, settings are stored. Setting these to default values might solve your problem.
3). Restart while holding down the shift key. This keeps extensions and applications from loading into memory at startup.
If you continue to have problems and you determine they are not related to a specific application, take the computer to an Apple store or authorized Apple repair center for more thorough diagnostics (or buy a program such as TechTool Pro 8 or Disk Warrior or any one of a number of others). I would do that before installing Mac OS X. The above suggestions take relatively little time compared to doing a reinstall of the operating system, which I would not recommend doing unless you are 100% certain your hardware is working properly. Also check https://retinamacapps.com/ there are many useful articles which can help.
When does it freeze exactly? When you are running an app or is it a sleep/awake failure?
Without knowing this, I will suggest the following:
Start by making sure you have the latest software updates. After that, go into your Applications, then Utilities and click on Disc Utility
Click on your drive then click on Repair Disk Permissions.
I hope this helps stop the freezing.

Hi, could you please give a little bit more information about your macbook freezing? When does it freeze, at boot? When using it? How often?
Hello, there are some steps that you can follow that should help you with your problem.
1. Obviously you should try to update your system to the latest version.
2. Check the processes that are running, maybe you have too many apps in the background that are slowing down you computer.
3. There is this process mdworker that can cause the system to slow down, a good try is to turn it off and on, here is an article about how to do this osxtips.net/mdworker-mac/
4. Maybe your mackbook is just old and you need an update.
