Mower blades won't engage

When I was mowing, there was a loud bang... smoke started coming out from under the deck and the blades stopped. Now the blades won't engage. I took the deck off, checked the belt, the blades and the pulleys... everything appears to be fine. The lever to engage seems to still be attached to the cable an pulls tight.

remember.... there is a solenoid/pulley assembly that engages the drive to run the deck blades... if it burned up, there's your problem. Also, there is a 20 amp fuse that protects the circuit for the solenoid

Did the smoking stop when you disengaged the blades? If so it is most likely your belt that is smoking. Make sure all the blades turn freely by hand to ensure you have not hit anything that may have bent a shaft on one of the blades. If one of the shafts is bent and wont turn FREELY, the belt driving the blades would slip and start smoking as it tried to turn them.

Testimonial: "Yes, it stopped smoking when I disengaged the blades. The belt was fairly new and now looks like it's been chewed. There was a grocery bag wrapped around on of the blade spindles when I removed the deck... could that have been the only problem? Perhaps now that the debris is removed, all I need to do is replace the belt? Thank you!"

That could very well have been the only problem. Just make sure all the blades and pulleys turn freely without the belt on. If the spin freely and "normaly", then just put on a new belt.

SOURCE: Craftsman 42" mower deck won't disengage

Try pulling on the cable coming down to deck. This cable might be your problem. Also check that the spring on the end of this cable is present and functional.

SOURCE: Found large spring at end

There are 4 pulleys on your deck. Two for the blades, these are the big ones on the outsides. To the insides there are two, one on left side is an idler and the one on the right is a tenioning pulley that hooks to the blade engage lever throught the cable you found. Look on top of this pulley and see if it has a piece sticking up. If so the spring at the end of the cable attaches here. Slide it over. You also need to find the clip that goes through the little hole in the end that keeps it from sliding off. Make sure that the cable is properly routed and attached near the back of the deck. If it is still attached, good, if not you will have to find that pin also.

If this is helpful, please rate.

Testimonial: "I tracked down the problem, hooked up the cable, put the pin back in, got the blades to engage before I got your response.Thank you just the same."

My deck mower(craftsman 917.271530)keeps shredding deck belts

You either have a bad bearing on one of the pulleys or one is loose and moving up and down drawing the belt when it is engaged. I would pull the mower deck off and go through it .

White smoke coming out of mower

It sounds as though you are losing power (electrical power); see if charging the battery fully allows it to run longer or if charging the battery helps.

Mowing the lawn and blades just quit cutting

There should be 2 wires coming off the blade clutch at the bottom of the engine and running over to the frame, check these to see if they have come unplugged or gotten cut. Also look for a fuse under your dash, I am not positive that this model has one but some tractors do have one for the blade clutch. If you don't see any thing wrong there, try turning on your ignition switch without starting the engine then engage the switch for the blades and listen for a loud "clicking" sound, if you don't hear it or it is very faint, you need to further inspect the blade clutch.

Lots of smoke when I engaged stuck blades - now runs roughly

Most likely what you did was burn one or more spots on the belt. When the blades and belt stop turning, like in tall grass, the engine doesn't stop and will burn flat spots on the belt at the engine pulley. Every time the flat spot hits a pulley, it will jump and can set up a bad vibration. Run your hand around the sides of the belt or take it off and you will feel or see the thin spot(s) on it. Replace belt.

I have a 18.5 hp 42" electric start craftsman mower. when i went to engage the blades the lever was harder to move than usual and once it was engaged nothing happened. blades not turning! please help.

When you move the lever and engage the blades you are also engaging the belt that drives the blades and sits on top of the mowing deck. Chances are that belt either came off one or more rollers, or broke. The only way to check it out is to get down and look on the top of the mowing deck. Get back and let me know what you find.
