That model that you listed is for a dishwasher. That means that the pump might be plugged or has failed because of wear or winding issues. Check the sump area and there are parts and diagrams here: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/kenmore-dishwasher-parts/model-58716149400/0582/0130000.html
So, got everything apart, there was a small screw and some plastic debris at the impeller. Impeller was still in good shape though. Turned the dial to the wash cycle and still made the humming/whining noise. I opened the door quickly and could see the impeller trying to turn and being erratic. I removed the sump assembly and the motor had some black residue coming from some I guess cooling vents. I'm guessing I need a new motor. Maybe the screw jammed the impeller and somewhat blew the motor?
They are not made to be very stout. When they start to go bad, the performance is impacted quickly.

You will need to replace the circulation pump. Here is the aprt to order.

I guess you mean by "not pumping water" the washer agitator is not moving back and forth as usual. I will guess that the motor control is not functioning properly. As I dimly recall the motor turns in one direction for the spin and the opposite direction for the agitation. So there is a "reversing" switch that may not be working properly. Or there is a problem with the Transmission for the spin and agitation.

Check your outlet filter, most likely it is blocked, preventing the water from draining out. Chk your pump too. Before this disconnect from the wall socket; and also check the pipe coming from the tub to the filter. Siphon out the excess water from inside the machine before you open the pipes.

You,ve done a good job the first time the pump fail MikieM. You can do it again. We sometimes forget to empty our pocket. Some small metal things could have gotten into the pump...could be other hard foreign object. Good luck.

SOURCE: Kenmore front load washer won't drain
Remove the bottom panel under the door to access the drain pump. Make sure the washer is unplugged before servicing the pump. The pump will be located under the wash tub in the front of the washer. There should be a small access cover that can be unscrewed to access the inside of the pump. If not, remove the inlet hose to access the pump impeller. HINT: Pull the drain hose from the standpipe and use a shop vac to pull a vacuum on the drain line. This will pull any remaining water out of the drain lines and wash tub. This will minimize the amount of water that spills out of the drain pump when you remove the access cover.
It does not take much to damage this small drain pumps. If you clean the pump thoroughly and it still exhibits drain problems, the manufacturer recommends replacing the pump.
If you require additional assistance, let me know before you rate the solution. I hope this helps you.

Yes sir, a bad motor coupler could cause the machine not to spin. You did the right thing in checking out the lid switch and the pump first. It sounds as if the motor coupling is worn and may be slipping. I will attach a link to a video that may assist you. Hope this helps and best wishes.
