Once you take off the front cover. You will see the impeller. Take of the rear cover and the shaft has a flat spot on it. You can hold it with a open ended wrench and spin off the impeller. It will be tight. There is no need to take it off unless it's broken.

I have a JRD10, and there is not flat spot after removing the rear cover. There is something attached to the shaft and a screw which I don’t see how to remove. I did put vice grips on it to keep it from moving but can’t get the screw on the impeller to break loose. Does the screw loosen clockwise or counter-clockwise. Either way, I don’t think I can break it loose. Suggestions?

How do I lock the shaft so that I can remove the impeller?

remove the cap at the rear of the motor. you'll see the shaft under the thermal overload. Take a 7/16 or 1/12 wrench depending on shaft size, turn the impeller until you see the slot for the wrench. you may have to remove the starting compassitor to make some more room. Hold your wrench with one hand and remove the impeller. ***some impellers have a lock screw in the middle of them, if you have one it is left handed threads, this must be removed before the impeller can be removed.

I need to know how to tape the impeller off. i was told that i had to pull the pump apart in order to remove the impeller????

You do not supply much information, but yes, the impeller sits right inside a pump housing, Split the housing and the impeller is the vaned part that is attached to the shaft, the pump rear casing will have remained behind. The should be a nut holding the impeller in place and it may very well be a left hand threaded nut. Remove the nut and the impeller will come off with a little coaxing. Some impellers are press fitted and may need a puller to remove.

How to remove impeller seal

Remove v-clamp from wet end.
Remove diffuser from wet-end using a flat blade screwdriver.
Remove impeller screw by turning clock-wise(this is a reverse threaded screw (some impellers dont have an impeller screw))
Remove back end of motor using a 1/4" hex driver.
Secure rear end of motor shaft by slipping a 7/16" open face wrench into rear electrical compartment
While securing the shaft, turn the impeller counter clockwise until its off.
Remove seal halfs and replace with identical seal.
Reverse to finish the install

I am installing a new water pump impeller and cover. To remove the old impeller, some suggest putting pressure against the kickstarter. I tried and that didn't work, the engine still turns over. Others...

There is a lock ring on inside of impeller inside cover you need to remove that lock ring in order to remove impeller.By just removing little cover exposing water impeller will not let you remove impeller.you need to remove the whole side case to get to lock ring.On most bikes you have to drain oil, coolant and remove case cover. If you google this,it will give you exact instuctions or possibly a you tube vidieo.A picture is worth a thousand words.Good luck....

Impeller rusted on how to remove

removing the Impeller, is actually not that bad. You say it's rusted on but I have to ask why you think it's "rusted". I have to assume it's just on real tight and you just assumed it's rusted. If your removing the impeller I have to assume either you need to place the shaft seal, the motor, or the impeller itself is bad and your replacing it. Either way the procedure is pretty much the same. To remove the impeller you need to lock the motor and unscrew impeller. Depending on the motor, you remove have a cap in the middle of the tail piece and hold with a wrench, usually 9/16", or remove a cap that covers the whole end and grab the shaft with a wrench (usually 7/16") by sliding it under one of the components and then turning impeller. If the impeller has a bolt or screw in the middle remove that first. It should be reverse thread so make sure you don't turn the wrong way and break or strip. If there is no screw, or after you've removed it, just spin the impeller off (it should be counter clockwise standard thread). If you can't do it by hand and assuming you don't have an impeller wrench, be very careful and use a large pliers, pipe wrench, or strap wrench to loosen it. After that you can unbolt the motor from the seal plate. If the Impeller is corroded, or rusted as you say and it's really hard to remove, you just have to man handle it. If the impeller breaks or the brass insert strips out, you'll have to cut it away till you get to the shaft and can use channel locks, locking pliers etc to remove the insert however necessary. It is rare for this to happen, but it can happen. Impellers can break, fail, or strip out like anything else.
Hope this helps. If you need further assistance post a reply in the comments, and don't hesitate to leave good thumb rating if you found this helpful. Thanks, and good Luck!

How to remove impeller from motor to replace. I 've removed all the bolts but can't remove the impeller from the shaft.

If it's a separate shaft, it requires a puller tool, but first you have to remove a nut that holds the impeller to the shaft. If the shaft is part of the impeller, meaning that it is a one piece fabrication, then there is nothing you can do about it. You haven't even stated where does this impeller come from, a washing machine, a water pump, etc.

Waterpump impellar removal

First you want to remove the water pump cover, under that you will see the impeller and it should have a 6mm bolt, (10mm head), that you will need to remove. Remove the bolt and then the impeller will lift off a "D" shaped shaft. Note that there will be a copper washer under the bolt securing the impeller, you should replace that every time you remove the impeller bolt because it prevents water from leaking through the shaft into the crankcase.

Pump disassembly

I removed the impeller on my DW761UQB. The instructions were molded into the plastic pump housing. This is how I DID MINE: Remove motor mount screws. Remove the chopper screw (screw only goes into impeller, not motor shaft). Remove chopper and rotate/remove strainer. Place socket or wrench on impeller tip and place another wrench on rear of motor's plastic fan. Unscrew fan from impeller shaft ( threads are LEFT handed, turn CW). Once fan is 'backed off' of the impeller, CAREFULLY pry the motor/fan from pump housing (impeller is attached to motor shaft via splines). Don't crack the delicate plastic pump housing. Mine was stuck, but separated with moderate force. Now remove the impeller/seals from the pump housing. This worked for MY above mentioned model, I don't know what other models it applies to. I am not a pro.
