Evinrude used a shift mechanism located in the lower unit that is actuated by a rod up to the linkage in the motor housing. It could be stuck anywhere along the way or the gear that shifts on the shaft could be immobile due to rust and corrosion.

You may want to find a blowup of your exact model via a Google search. Then starting from the top look for your problem. be sure to mark the position of anything adjustable so you can at least get it back to the original position when you reassemble it.

Disconnect the shifter cable , remove the spark plugs and try rotating the flywheel a turn or two . Then manually try shifting the shifter watching to see if it is hanging up .

This is easier than you might think, HOWEVER, since you have never done one before, go to your local library and ask for the repair manual for a 1970 Evinrude engine. Because of the age, the library may have the manual in it's archives, but it will have detailed step by step instructions for every repair you choose to "tackle" on this engine... Good Luck!

Getting water in carbs not from fuel tank it happens when I put it in forward it's a 140 evinrude looper

Your engine should be sealed enough to prevent this..unless you have the engine mounted so low it idles under water...???.. There is a seal that goes between the lower cowl pieces and the engine, a seal around the engine cover(cowl)...and seals that surround all wires and cables.

I was given a 1980 evinrude 50hp. And it seems to be stuck in gear. Forward i think. This is my first boat ever so im not sure where to begin. something to do with the wiring? Any suggestions?

Check the drive cables. If they are untreated it makes it hard to move the gear shift.

I have a 2000 225 evinrude fitch.this weekend i would idle in forward gear afte a10 to 20 min. of running. the motor would shut off .when i ried to restart i had no power to spin starter.i let it sit for...

Have you checked the oil quantity AND quality in your drive?
You can drain the gearbox by removing the lower drain plug and the filler plug on the drive.
It's possibily full of water and your drive just seize when hot...

I would say the cables or rods that go from the motor to the gears are broke or stripped.

1968 evinrude starflite 100 hp no spark

Some of those had a battery ignition with a short cap and rotor, and some had a magneto which reached down into the bucket. Both had points and condenser like an old car. The cog belt location was critical. 2 teeth off and it would not fire. the key switch was wired diferently for each ignition system.

I have a Evinrude Ficht 135 that Runs Ok but won't go in to gear, forward or reverse. Any ideas?

Disconnect the shift cable and see if the problem is with the shift box or the lower unit. If the lower, remove the bottom plug and look for water or metal where there should be clean oil.

If the shift box, take to the marina- they were a bear. Even just for cables.

Hi, did you buy your engine used? Sounds like your gonna have to get the carb or carbs cleaned. Its possible you could have a stopped up fuel filter, or not enough spark but i am guessing its gonna be the carbs. They got some gunk in em i bet. Probably old fuel turned to gunk from setting up. I had the same problem on my 40 horse.
