In order to find out the exact draw length, hold a tape measure in your bow hand and then pull the tape measure as you would a bow string to the corner of your mouth.
The bow length needs to match your draw length because the bow limb is designed to be used at a particular draw length range. For instance if you use a bow with limbs too long for your draw length, you won't be able to flex the limbs enough to make them efficient.
