I also have had the exact problem with my PCM D 50`s (I have 20 machines because I teach radio journalism). 8 of my D 50`s are not working. They don´t start, freezes and nothing helps. I´ve been in contact with Sony and they say it´s a problem with "the power board". What´s the problem, they will not tell. It would cost me about 300 dollars to fix the problem. Instead I´ve bought new Sony M 10 for less money. They work just fine.

I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.
Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV
up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors.
Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although
were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of
preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected
due to these defective capacitors.
Solutions?
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.

If the green lites on bord lites up doesnt mean it is ok. If you check on that board in the middle at the back of the heatsink in the middle, there is two lights, green lights that is not lighting up. If i am wright. You have caps an a transistor on your powersup that is shorted. Take to somebody to fix powersupply.
My Sony KV 32HV600 will not turn on,
unless I take it for a car ride
THen it will turn on
and is fine until it shuts off again.

definately there is a loose contact as you have ezplained.
please check connector or some print loose or parts loose in power supply.
if it is ok then check h/output section for loose or print break.
it is not a major problem &can fixed ar home.
no need to change board remove board &check for print.
it requires tech knowledge.
