Description
Initializes the hard disk.

Plug hdd to usb, after that, right click on my computer and go to manage, there go to disk management. You should see there all hard drives connected to your computer. Here localize your external hdd and see if it is initialized (you'l see in the right side of device the status), if it's not initialized right click on that area and initialize the hdd. After that go on the left side again right click and there could be two ways to format these hdd
1. if windows see something on hdd right click and go to format and follow the instructions from there
2. if windows don't see any partition there you must create one. Right click on hdd and select create new partition and after that follow instruction on your screen

No need for software. The standard hard drive size is 10GB. I don't remember the exact limit but the machine will only recongnize a certain amount so it will do you any good to buy a larger capacity drive. Just get the smallest/cheapest one and you'll be fine. These take the smaller "laptop" size drive in case you did not know. Other than that just install the new drive and let the machine do the setup. If your old drive failed then keep in mind you will have lost any document server files, scan destination or fax destination info and will have to re-enter that info.

New HDD Not Recognized by Computer

This occurs when the HDD is not “Initialized” by the disc management system in Windows. If you do not have software that came with HDD or the HDD is a secondary drive for backup and is not to be used as an initial boot device, then when you installed the drive it did not go through the necessary steps or Windows simply failed to do it’s job. In this case, connect the drive as you normally would, go to the control panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Look in the left Pane, scroll down and click on Disk Management.
Your drives will be listed here, even if they are not initialized. Look below the top pane and find the disk that is listed without a drive letter. If you look at where the drive is named, it will also say “offline”. Right click in this area that says “offline” and click on “Initialize”. The system will ask a few questions, just click ok to what it asks, this will initialize the disk and you can then partition the new drive to how you want it set up.

check the device manager to see if the device has been found then check the driver status ? Not shown in the Device Manager , has been turend off in the bios ? do a add hardware to see what it finds ?

After plugging ur HDD, verify the device is detected or not in Device manager and Try Partitioning Again GUI mode (means in XP).. or follow the steps..

1- Go to Computer Management, Click Disk Management
2 - You will find you External HDD in the Right side
3 - Just Right Click the Drive, if it asks Initialize HDD, just Initialize and Create Partition as u like.

Remove the back panel of the player you will probably find that it will work fine. I did this to my daughters unit and found that the panel was pushed in and depressing the reset button all the time. I rescued it out of the garbage when she bought an i-pod, now I have this unit for myself and it works great.

I know your problem. Your HDD is not clipped in. Press that little square circut thing in untill you hear a click.

The HDD is disconnected from the player. When you open up the player just carefully push the circut board thing on the gold foil behind the hdd in untill it clicks.
