If the fan has a 'run' capacitor, in rare cases, a faulty capacitor will cause a single phase motor to start in reverse. In most cases a faulty capacitor will cause the motor to only hummmm and not start or start slowly running the right direction then overheat and shut off.

See if there is a capacitor, change it first. If that doesn't fix it it sounds like its time for a new motor.

SOURCE: Dayton 3EV51 torpedo heater

Dayton heaters at one time were manufactured by DESA or a predecessor and labeled DAYTON for Grainger. I have been unable to find any specific reference material to "Dayton 3EV51".

There were 2 types of motors used. I suspect your heater has a starter relay. The solid state relay was used to allow the energizing of the start winding which would allow the motor to achieve approx 80% of rated speed, then the relay would de-energize the start winding to prevent overheating. The relay is not attached to the motor, except for the wiring.

5ef4624.jpgThis is what the starter relay looks like. If yours has one check to see if it is energizing the starter windings at start-up. If not it is probably defective. The part is still available at www.reddyparts.com, I think, but today's replacement part looks slightly different.

If your motor does not have the relay, then the motor has an internal start-up system which is not serviceable, but the motor is probably still available. Most of the time the motor's part number is printed on the label.

Good luck!

We need to know more. Is this a kerosene or a propane fired heater?

SOURCE: Dyna Glo Pro RMC-KFA70TDGP 70,000 BTU Torpedo heater not igniting

The main circuit board supplies ac power to the ignitor ( black transformer looking device) and the transformer increases the voltage that is supplied to the sparking device. Make sure the wires are connected to the sparking device and the ends of this device are approximately 3mm apart and that it is in the general position near the end of the nozzle. If you do not hear a "clicking" sound it could be the main board, wires or sparking device.

SOURCE: Century Dyna-Glo Propane Construction Heater, fan stays on?

The heater is designed to continueously run the igniter , so as if there is a flame-out ,it will reignite the burner, and not dispurse unburned gas into your enviroment.

SOURCE: 150,000BTU kerosene heater won't start,just buzzes.

Your starting capacitor is bad. It's usually mounted on the side of the motor. If not, it's the thing that the motor wires go to from the end of the motor. Usually, less than $10.

I have a remington 115,000 btu torpedo heater that won't start. It was working fine and tried to start it and now it won't do anything

I have the same unit with the same problem. In checking it out I find that the electric motor that powers the fan and an air compressor (used to spray the kerosene) is not running. I attribute that to the start capacitor but it could be a problem with the compressor binding up. Either way it looks like it's time to replace the motor/compressor assembly which is about 100 bucks for the parts. That is my best guess at this point.

My Reddy heater torpedo multi fuel heater won't start this year. It makes a loud humming noise for a minute or so and then nothing. If I try starting it a few times in a row it will make the noise...

Remove the top cover and rotate the fan by hand. If should turn pretty easily. If not may you can put some oil where the shaft passes through the ends otherwise you will need a new motor. If the fan turns easily then the capacitor is probably shot. I don't know if you can get the capacitor seperate from the motor or not. There is a small low pressure compressor attached to the back of the motor. Your problem may also lie in there. The covers come off easily so you can check it out.
