It starts fine, but when I put it in gear to go forward or reverse it dies. It also dies ... The engine on my riding mower will start and run while the clutch is pushed in.

Sound like a safety switch has gone bad. Either the clutch or seat switch are bad.

the belt will be on the mower deck awnd run to the pulley on the bottom of the motor.

I believe when you push in the brake you remove tension from the drive belt and engine. Their is a spring that pushes back on the brake pulley and your peddle. check this for wear

sounds like you need a new drive belt

You have governor with a missing spring or it could be in the wrong place. If the springs are all OK then you may have a bad governor gear in the crankcase. This engine is bad about the governor gears bending the governor gear shaft.
