Repair of drum bearing

Sounds very much like the drum bearings have failed. It is not a DIY job I'm afraid. Up to date washing machines are now impossible to actually replace bearings and only way to repair is to replace inner and outer drum assembly. This is a 1/2 a day job at the least to a professional. Older machines.....you can replace the bearings but this still involves removing the outer drum ou from under the washing machine, and the a very normal bearing removal and replacement procedure. Make sure the bearings are knocked in very straight and not on the skew. Good luck

the maytag has a bearing made if a cloth material that is at the front of the drum. when this wears down drum is grating off the metal drum support, hence the grinding sound. the bearing is fairly straight forward to replace.

It sounds like your diagnosis is correct. A failed bearing will cause the symptoms you describe. The bearing can be replaced but is a pretty big job. With the washing machine being almost 10 years old I would recommend looking around for a new one. The bearing replacement will usually run over 1/2 the cost of a new machine.

If you have loud noises on spin it is quite possibly bearings.
You may also find that the inner drum becomes loose and may contact and wear the outer drum..
Replacing the bearings and possibly the shaft going through them is quite a big job. Best left to an experienced tech..

Spin bearing replacement is quite a big job..You may also have to replace the shaft which goes from the pulley to the inner drum.
The easiest way to do the job is to replace the rear drum, but the bearings and seals can be replaced individually...Get quotes for both methods..

Most likely this will be the drum bearings.
Bearings normally last quite a long time but some will fail sooner than others. Quite often bearing failure is due to a faulty drum shaft seal which allows a small amount of water through and in to the bearings. The bearings then start to rust, which then accelerates the wear on the bearings.

Replacing the bearings needs well above average DIY skills to do, so unless you feel confident to tackle the job, can get hold of a tech manual, and can get hold of new bearings, it's time to call an engineer.

There is no doubt that the drum bearings have failed from your description.
The normal procedure is to replace the whole drum and tub assy as a complete unit, this makes it a fairly straight forward repair, though relatively expensive.
To strip it down and replace worn bearings, is a very involved repair, and not one I would recommenend.
If the washer is less than 5 years old, then you can get it done under the Hotpoint 5 year part guarantee, but you would have to contact Hotpoint about this.

Procedure is much the same, just easier. Don't take belt off. Pull drum straight forward six inches or so and replace the hat shaped teflon drum bearing.

Hi, This isn't much of a fix, more of a diagnosis, but it does sound like the drum bearings have failed. If you open the door and grasp the inner drum, you might be able to lift the drum up and down more than before.

You may be able to obtain new bearings from a local supplier or Ebay, but this will only be of use if you have the tools and experience to fit them. As a "repairman" job, it is likely to be quite expensive.
One other possibility is that the springs and shock absorbers that locate the drum in the casing have come off or failed, but in that case the whole outer drum would likely have slumped forwards or sideways.
I'm a bit reluctant to advise on matters like this as the poster sometimes wants to shoot the messenger!

sounds like it could be a bad bearing or brake package. depending on how much the charge is to repair/replace the part i woild weigh it against purchase of a new machine. either job is labor intensive
