You have to be more slow and even speed. The main thing is to not pull on the thread. The top and bottom thread have to work together in order to sew. Try to practice in a forward motion and then backwards. Make sure that you have the right pressure foot being used.

When I had this problem, even though I have been sewing for years, I was just not threading the needle properly. Make sure the presser foot is raised when you thread the needle. Another reason is that the thread is too old, the needle is not the correct size or type for the material, neither is the thread. Hope this helps. It's usually nothing to do with the bobbin, but the upper thread.

Is your needle in backwards? check that the flat shank is to the back. Also ensure it is fully up into the housing.

Is the top thread actually threaded through the needle okay?

Obviously if you are an experienced user of this machine and have rechecked your threading up fully and the needle, then it is possible that the timing is out, ie needle at the lowest point as the rotary hook passes behind it to catch the needle thread - these two things moving together must be in expactly right sequence to form a stitch.

If you suspect that this is what's happening, then probably time to drive it to the service shop.

When you first start to sew turn your right wheel by hand to take up the bobbin thread to the top of the face plate. Pull the bobbin thread and sewing thread together out for a couple of inches to avoid a jam of thread in your first few stiches.

Choice of thread is entirely up to you.
If it is a fancy dress use once affair, cheap is fine. If you want a robust result that will last, then use quality thread, if you go to all that trouble, why skimp on the one thing holding it all together ?
Maxi Lock sounds like Serger/Overlocker thread on a large cone, it will be thinner than standard thread and you may also have tension issues in bobbin abd top tension,

First thing is pin the heck out of it. I would not use a needle bigger than a 16. Set the tension midway and then just tweak it one way then the other to get a smooth stitch. And for your thread, just use polywrapped cotton thread and you should be fine.

Im not sure if this will help but thought I would pass it along. My Pfaff 6122 tells me to check bobbin for thread unrolling clockwise before you place it back in the machine. I had mine turned to un roll counter clockwise, this is wrong, the bobbin will fall out when you pull on the thread while you are holding it in your hand. You may just keep putting it in backwards. you need to replace your shukle that holds the tread bobbing below.it is either slack or broken . if it is slack then you tighten the little screw that holds a cover that gives the thread tension .if its broken then replace it.once the thread is slack below it will cause your thread to bundle up.
