You should see at least 60 psi but 90 is better... do to the compression release mechanism if the engine cranks slow you might not see anything above 60...

too much oil...drain it (all of it !!) and refill with "no more than" 2 qts...keep checking it as you fill...now...since it has been smoking, it will for a while until the oil residue in the muffler is burned out...also, replace the plugs...cleaning is no guarantee that they won't foul out...

I had the same problem and talked to 3 different techs. The only solution they would come up with is to replace the carb. I didnt believe this was the problem. If you have a fuel solenoid on the bottom of the float bowl remove it and just put in a float bowl plug that threads in. I just taped up the solenoid connector. It runs better than it ever did. I believe the solenoid gets hot and starts shutting off the fuel. I used a plug from a spare set of 1977 yamaha motorcycle carbs I had sitting around.Go figure. Hope this works

When the float in the carb sticks, it allows fuel to drain into the cylinder, that runs pass the rings into the crankcase. When the crankcase is full the pistons cannot go down, and the starter won't turn the engine. Drain all the oil gas mixture, and refill with proper oil. Replace float, needle and seat in the carb bowl. Throughly clean fuel passages, and bowl. If motor won't turn, remove spark plug and turn over engine a few times to remove gas oil mixture from the cylinder too.

If the mower starts and continues to run after injecting, you may want to make sure the choke is working properly. If the choke plate is not closing all the way, it will make cold starts difficult.

Testimonial: "thanks for the help the choke was open just a little"

What is the compression lbs for a 18 hp brigg/stratton intek engine

Not sure where to get compression pounds for this, but let me refer you to the Briggs website for detailed product specs and power curves.
Intek can be twin or single sylinder.

For Twin....
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/us/en/engines/rider-mower-engines/intek-series-v-twin

For single....the are in 1/2 HP ratings but the link is below....
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/us/en/engines/rider-mower-engines/intek-with-xrd-single-cylinder

If further detail is required, I will need the model type and trim found on the valve cover.

I have a briggs and stratton 18 hp vanguard mod 356447 that will not start when trying to start it backfires through the carb, It seems to have good spark on both cyclinders using a sprak plug test light....

I would still say it's a timing issue. Check the spark plug leads go to the correct cylinders. Was there a woodruf key locating the flywheel and did you replace it? Check points and any cams or anything to do with the ignition.

18 hp vanguard 165lbs and 180 lbs compression have to hand turn engine past compression or starter wont turn engine over

if its hard to get the engine to turn past the compression release then pull your valve coversand try setting your valve lash

I have a 18 hp briggs and stratton engine that will not start

A few more things to check.
1. The oil level. If the oil level is low the oil level sensor will ground the ignition.
2. Check the wiring from the seat safety switch to make sure it is connected.
3. Follow the black wires from the ignition control module to make sure none of them are chaffing and do not have a chassis ground.

If you still have problems disconnect ONE lead from the oil level sensor and see if you have spark. Most of the time these oil level sensors are the common failure.

I put a new carburator kit in a Briggs & Stratton 18 HP Twin. But did not replaced the needle nor the new seat that came with kit, because I did not know how to remove it and did not to damage it. now the gas over flows
