Broken latch on LG side-by-side refrigerator

My ice maker on my LG has an interior door to access the ice maker chest. The latch is stuck and the door won't open. The upper hinge is accessible and easy to remove, but the lower hinge is not. How do I fix this latch?

If the door won't latch, the door latch assembly might be defective. These are normally made of plastic and cannot be repaired. If the door won't latch and the door latch is broken, replace it.
It can also be a defective main control board, but this is not common.

Put the LG in the trash. I did after pay 150.00 three time to fix the latches that kept breaking. LG stands for Loads of Garbage.

The insulation is all foamed in place. Doors can not be dissassembled, other than replacing gaskets.

Sounds likely. Did you try shooting a little wd-40 on the latch, then push something about the size of the pin in there to work it loose?

I'd look into the original owners manual that shows how to align the French doors when first purchased. Sounds like heavy usage, or it was improperly put on when you first got it. Try that first, re-align, and tighten the bolts. Last resort is replacing the latches, call the LG customer service center at 1 800 243-0000 for details.

Hi,

Run a shoelace between the door and the face of the washing machine, starting at the top, over the latch on the middle of the right hand side and down to the bottom.

Pull both ends of the shoelace towards the hinge on the left.

This pulls open the latch with NO DAMAGE and allows access to the screws that remove the latch mechanism. Easily ordered and installed with two screws and a plug to reattach.

LG give no support or reference to this easy procedure in their manual. SHAME!

We solved this problem by replacing the plastic parts on the top & bottom of the door that 'latch' the door closed.

On the top of each door is a white plastic 'cam' that latches into a receiver at the center point of the refrigerator chamber. One of mine was broken.
Additionally, on the bottom edge of each door is a white plastic hook-shaped 'stopper' that provides spring tension. I replaced both of those and now all is happy.
