Actually, your husband is correct. The settings reflect the amount of humidity you want to remain in the house. I really don't think you want to leave 50 to 60% humidity in the house.
35% removes the greatest amount of humidity.
Hope this helped answer your question and thanks for choosing FixYa.
Prt of the problem may be a dirty or clogged air intake filter.
Turn the unit OFF and unplug, it before removing the filter to check and clean it. You can ether vacuum it or if it's really dirty & clogged, wash it in warm water and mild dish washing liquid. Rinse thoroughly, shake off access water and allow it to dry completely, before reinstalling it. Never operate the unit without the filter in place. As this could damage the unit.
Plug the unit back in and turn it ON. Try lowering the humidity extraction level now, using the arrow down button. For a very damp, humid basement application 35% is a good setting to start with for several days.
Hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.
It may very well be that you have the humidity extraction level set to high. Lower it to 32-35%. If you have a manual unit, set the control to Maximum. Since it's a basement application, raising the unit up off the floor on to a sturdy table or counter top that can handle the weight of the unit, plus a full bucket of water, may also solve the problem. As, the air temp at floor level is colder than at chest or shoulder level. Dehumidifiers do not work well at temperatures between 40 - 60 degrees F. Unless you have what's called a Low Temp Model. They are specifically designed for basement applications.
Hope this helped you to troubleshoot and solve the problem
No, it's probably not shot. Just may need some adjustments. Below are the common causes of the problem you're having.
1. The humidity extraction level is set to HIGH. Lower it to 32 - 35%
2. Air intake filter is dirty or clogged and needs to be removed and cleaned.
3. Clear air obstruction. Maintain at least 12" of clear air space around the entire unit, while in operation.
4. The ambient air temperature at floor level is between 40 - 60 degrees F. This is particularly true in basement applications. Raise the unit up off the floor, onto a sturdy table, cabinet, etc, that will hold the weight of the unit, plus a full tank of water. The air temp at chest level is warmer than floor level in a basement. Unless, your dehumidifier is what's called a Low Temperature Model (designed for basements) it may be contributing to the problem. Although, based on all the odds, numbers 1 & 2 above, are going to be the culprit.
Hope this helped you to troubleshoot and solve the problem. Please let me know. Thanks.
If you're setting the humidity level on 70 % , that means you want to leave the relative humidity in the house at 70%. That's why the dehumidifier is cutting off. Your house is already at 70% humidity or higher. If you want to remove humidity, set the level lower. If your trying to make it cooler in the house or remove a lot of moisture, set it a 35 to 45%.
The lower the setting the longer the run time, so if you set this unit to 20%, it should in essence run constantly, as it would be quite difficult to pull a basement down to such a low humidity level. Hope this helps.
Your coil temperature has to be below the dewpoint of the air in the basement to remove the moisture. If you can set the temperature lower or the fan speed lower it will help.
