Don't know if this is your problem but here is what happened to mine..
My lawn tractor is about 10 years old. It has been generally quite reliable. However I was mowing with it one day and after 15 minutes or so it started hunting and then quit. After a few minutes it restarted and ran for a further 15 minutes. This time I disconnected the gas line after the fuel filter and nothing came out. I removed the filter and blew through it and it was clear. But no gas came out of the gas line till I pointed it downward then got a good flow. Reassembled and drove for a few more minutes and quit again. Checked the spark - good. I removed the gas line after the filter again intending to blow some air into the carburetor to clear any obstacles there except - no gas from the line. I removed the gas cap and out came the gas. The problem was the pinhole vent on the cap was plugged and not allowing air into the tank to replace the gas being consumed. Cleared that and solved the problem! Hope it helps someone else save $150 or whatever it costs to take it into the shop!

SOURCE: 42" mtd yardmachine belt keeps coming off

twords the rear of the deck there are two bars with pins that hold the deck.they should have 3 or 4 holes where you can adjust the rear of the deck.check to see if there set to the middle somewhere,if so you can disconnect the 2 pins and try going up 1 hole iif that didn't work try down 1 from original point.

SOURCE: MTD Yard Machine does not go forward or reverse - I replaced belt

I think that the belt is not on right. if you look at the belt diagram from the top, then on the left side then the belt is hooked up to nothing. on the right side then the belt goes through the left side of the clutch pulley.

SOURCE: MTD 42 inch hydrostatic drive lawnmower

1...first and foremost check the fluid level and top off with mobil 1 full synthetic 20w50 oil,
2...check the the engine pulley for wear
3...check idler arm spring tention.
inside yout transmission is a center pump section and swash plates and a set of 6-8 pistons , if dirt is allowed into the transmission it causes severe wear to these parts

my recomendation would be to dissasemble the transmission and inspect the pump center section and swash plates for wear....look for tiny scratches on the bearing surfaces, if it is worn then replace parts as needed. these worn parts will cause the transmission to "growl" or as you say "grind"

Craftsman 42 in Deck Lawn Tractor jerks/bucks when in forward during turns. Is there an adjustment or do I need a new belt?

Sounds like to me you need a new belt! The belt is automatically tensioned by a spring on most mowers by MTD, the major mfr for most mowers including craftsman.

I HAVE A 660 SERIES MTD YARD MACHINE 17.5HP 42

If the speed seems to be different after changing the belts, it should return to normal after they break in.

The 600 series has a top speed of about 5 - 6 MPH, see:
