My lawn tractor(model#502.255190 or193)keeps blowing solenoids.Except for the hot wire going to the battery there are only two wires. One(red) goes to towards the engine and has a fuse. The other wire

Solenoid wiring. There are only three wires (other than the hot going to the + of the battery. The 10g coming from the engine,the red 16g coming from the ignition(has an inline fuse) and the yellow coming from the limit switch on the seat.I keep blowing the solenoids. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You, Kevin

Check the voltage to the solenoid coil when attampting to start the engine, you can also remove the 10ga. wire from the starter and check it that way too. with the starter motor spinning your voltage to the solenoid coil (the small wires) should be no less than 8-9 volts. With the starter spinning voltage to the starter should be about the same, anything less and you could be dealing with a bad connection at the battery, solenoid or the wire ends themselves. Of course all of this is assuming the battery is healthy and fully charged, weak batteries kill starter motors and starter solenoids, it makes them get real hot and fail prematurely.

SOURCE: Craftsman garden tractor Mod # 917.257740 blows main fuse.

Try checking the battery - make sure it is not under rated - over rated and be sure the starter it's self isn't drawing too much amperage.
the battery may need replacing and for a temp fix - put in a larger fuse - say 50 amp.

When the ignition key is turned to the start position you should have a 12 volt supply to the low tention wire at the solinoid, if not you need to check if there is a 12 volt supply to the back of the ignition switch, if not there is a break in the wiring to one of these components, also check that there is a good eart to the chassis from the black battary leed.

Returning wires back to the solenoid starter on the Murray12.5 HP

ALWAYS disconnect the battery to frame (ground) connection while servicing electrical systems.

There should be two larger red wires (~8AWG), a smaller red wire and a smaller Orange/White wire. Identify the large red wire from the starter and attach it to either of the two large solenoid contactor posts. Then connect the other large red wire comming from the battery AND the smaller red wire to the other large contactor post. Then connect the Org/Wht wire to the smaller solenoid (+coil) post. Reconnect battery ground.

My 17.5hp murray will not turn over. i tried jumping but still will not turn over. could it be starter?

Could be, but first put your hot jumper wire lead where the red wire is on your solenoid and ground the other to the frame. Also, check your battery to see if it's fully charged.

Replaced starter dont remember how wires go back. the large red small red and the blue with the female slide on wires i know where they go but the larger blue one with the o shaped end i not sure if it...

you will have 3 or 4 wires to the solenoid. it sounds like you know where the 2 small ones go so the other 2 are for the battery and starter. one side of the solenoid will have a wire from the battery and the other side will have a wire to the starter. these 2 wires are larger because they carry the amperage required to turn the starter.

go to page c then download wiring diagram

it should vave main switch connection on it ( may need to enlarge )

basically switch markings

G= ground ( usually black )

L = lights/ carb solenoid if it has one

M = magnetron kill wire ( usually black )

S = starter solenoid ( white ,usually goes through a interloc but could be orange check your diagram )

B = battery this wire will come from the the battery itself directly or from the hot post of the starter solenoid )

suspect 5 terminal 3 position switch

connections for off G + M

connection for on/ run B + L

connection for start B+ L + S

hope this helps , if not get back to try help further

When installing a new battery does the red wire go to the positive post?

yes ...

easy way to remember is the '-' or "neg" post of the battery goes to the wire that goes to the frame or engine block. The other post (usually red) goes to the start solenoid.

If you unplug your harness from the key switch on the back of the key switch you will see by the terminals letters stamped a S for solenoid a L for lights B for battery G ground and a M for magneto. This will tell you were the loose wires should go. Hope this helped.

I have a white lawn tractor and i just change the battery and the spark plug and it wont start . I also have current to my switch to start but no current to the starter . Could you solve this.

do you have power from the switch to the starter solenoid ? What you should have is a battery lead going to the starter relay / solenoid. a battery lead coming from the relay / solenoid to the starter and a 12 or 14 gauge wire coming from the switch to the relay solenoid. Depending on the age of the machine this wire may actually go direct to the solenoid or it may have to go through a couple of safety switches. the first thing I would check is make sure you have power coming out of the starter switch to the start circuit. The terminal on the switch is usually marked with an s for starter / solenoid. If you have power coming out from here then trace this wire to either a safety switch or relay solenoid, keep checking for 12 vdc until you dont have power and you will either find the problem or the bad part... hope this helps you

30 amp fuse blows when trying to start engine

I always start by unplugging lights, kill wire to coil electric clutch if it has one ,sometime its the fuel shut off solenoid on the bottom of carb if it has one.
You can keep trying until you find the thing that does not blow a fuse or use an ohm meter to read from pos cable to ground of tractor unhook ground wire to battery you will read short to ground thru coil kill wire,starter solenoid small wire on spade,fuel shut off
solenoid ,electric clutch ,rectifier (charging system )and large wire to starter thats why I unplug them .
I have seen more shorts from lights , fuel shut off solenoid , charging system. not ing coil not safety switches not even bad starters.
good luck
