I have the same soldering iron and have found for this problem, the replaceable tip has worn out. All you need to do is buy a replaceable tip of your choice. The tips are a consumable part that wears out.
You should always unplug a waffle iron because other wise there is a constant direct current to the iron element which if left unattended could cause a fire damage and/or death, any heating element that you cannot break the current(unlike a stove) needs to be unplugged because of the danger and the juice it is also pulling from the power company that you are paying more money for.
