Can someone help me, 1989- 75 mercury boat motor, runs good, but never know if it's going to turn over, if it does turn over it will start,, here's how it go's turn key starts no problem, then we going out fish for awhile, then turn key,, may or may not turn over, then we wait a bit and try again,, if we are lucky it will turn over, and start, but most of the time all we get is a click and , not turning over, but if we put booster cables from trolling battery, will turn over and start, NOW is it the battery or the starter,
You have one of two problemsyour starter brushes are sticking or your solenoid is going bad next timme it happens take a hammer and lightly tap the starter if it turns over your starter is going bad if you try this repeatly and nothing then you have a bad solenoid they are not expensive if you do not want to tap the starter then just replace the solenoid the best way to find it is follow your main battery line to motor where it stops and breaks with two posts and then the hot goes to the sarter take a picture of it so if you need to take it with you u acn see where the wires go oriellys probally will have it is round and you battery will go to one post and the hot to the starter will go to the other there will be to little posts on it as well one to the key switch and the other is a groud

Thanks very much,I will try the hammer tap,and then see how it gos,and then replace the solenoid,if needed, thanks again, you were a big help.
Sounds very much like a poor connection. It could be internal (solenoid or key switch) or at any electrical connection between the battery and the starter. Often the problem is inadvertently corrected by changing a part that may not have needed replacement, just by un fastening and re-fastening connections while doing that work. Better to carefully go over everything before making any repairs.
