For what I can find online the Whatsapp program is supposed to be installed on the phone. Please check the manual, because I can't find one. You only need to know how the app looks like on the screen. You also need to have phone numbers with your contacts, and the contacts must have installed whatsapp on their phone to, to be able to send a message.
First open whatsapp, the tap the three dots at the bottom of the screen. Tap on 'Settings'. Swipe to 'Profile' (once to the right), next tap the picture. You will be redacted to a screen named 'Choose Picture' now select either: 'Make photo', 'Choose from album' (or 'Delete'; this will not be importent for your problem.) Now Choose / Make a photo and it will automatically change your profile picture. Good luck!
