Sounds like the old brick cooked the Xbox somewhere when it allowed it to overheat. You'll need a replacement console or you could try baking the board but I don't recommend it if you haven't before.

I've had the same problem with my system, and found all my solutions here. Try it out, it worked for me.

You need either a blue Ethernet cable to connect the Xbox to an internet outlet or a wireless router. If you use the wireless router, hook it up to your computer so it broadcasts a signal, then, depending on what Xbox you have, if its the new 360 slim you won't need a wireless adapter, you search for the signal, then connect it. If you don't have the 360 slim, then you need to buy a wireless adapter and it plugs into the back of the Xbox.

The power cords for the Xbox 360 and the Xbox 360 slim have different shaped plugs. If the plug you are using is not fitting it is likely that you have purchased the incorrect cord. If this is the case you will need to purchase a new cord.
When you purchase your new power cord make sure that it is designed for the original Xbox 360 NOT the Xbox 360 slim.

well first you would need to determine wether or not the 250gb hard drive has failed. I assume you have the new xbox 360 slim. So what you can do is remove the hard drive and reinsert it and make sure that it is firmly attached. If you do not know how you can watch this video. make sure the xbox is off and unplugged when doing this.

after that if it still doesnt work because the xbox 360 slim is new you will be able to call microsoft and get a replacement hard drive for the unit. But as i said you need to make sure the hard drive is seated correctly and not failed/DOA. If the hard drive is failed and after reseating it you still cannot get it to work let me know and i can give you instructions on how to get ahold of microsoft and get it repaired under warranty.
