To determine if the keyboard or the keyboard controller is faulty, plug an USB keyboard into the USB port on your laptop. If all the keys are OK on the USB keyboard then the laptop's keyboard is faulty and needs to be replaced. If the USB keyboard also malfunctions then the keyboard controller chip on the motherboard is faulty, then the motherboard needs to be replaced, but this may not be a cost effective solution. A replacement keyboard for your model laptop maybe available from this WEB site.Keyboard replacement, LCD screens for mobile phones, Ipods and computer equipment.http://www.yallstore.com/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&search_in_description=1&zenid=1lrjst3ncshlb4c7frn9bev3c3&keyword=keyboards
Check that the key depresses all the way (same amount as other keys next to it). If so, then the most likely problem is that the keyboard has failed. You can have the keyboard replaced fairly easily.
Keyboard for the Dell Vostro 1520 costs $20 or less depending on where you buy. You can view YouTube videos on how to replace the keyboard or have someone professionally replace it for you.
Replace the inside of the keyboard with a new piece. One of the major problems with Dell keyboards is that the plastic pieces holding the keys in place become loose or broken. You can find a cheap keyboard from Papatek.com or an electronics store. Simply take apart the new keyboard, pull the keys off your keyboard, lay the plastic piece on top and replace your keys. http://www.papatek.com/Acer-Keyboard/Acer-Travelmate-8100-keyboard.html
You don't have to buy a whole new keyboard to replace few keys.
Try taking off the key cap and its retainer clips (plastic pieces underneath the key cap).
Repair it yourself with the help of this video:
for laptop keyboard, you'll need to replace the whole thing, the main reason behind it is if a customer needs to replace a single key then the company would just ship a practically weightless peice of plastic were shipping would cost more than the actual part. Also in company invetory of parts there are no part numbers for every key on the keyboard, it needs to be a kit. So that's why they would replace the keyboard for you.
actually the keys are not replaced its the whole keyboard which needs to be replaced ....also its not a costly thing to get a new keyboard for the computer.
there are ways to replace laptop keyboards but it is expensive. try going to a computer repair shop, they may have a broken laptop with the same keys as yours. you can also get a external usb keyboard.
