A common question on FixYa.com is about different fan noises that happen and the causes. These noises are often fairly easy to fix and some are the result of other problems.

If you are hearing a rattling noise or a squeaking, high pitched squeal coming from the bottom or back or the refrigerator then the condenser fan motor is probably going bad. Sometimes the bearing in the fan motor will even get so bad that the fan blade will start to hit anything that is close to it down there. This can create a very loud noise. This fan normally will be running when ever the compressor is running also.

As with any other problems you will want to get these things fixed promptly. If the problem is just a squeal a bit of light motor oil will do wonderful things for you. Many times though, you will have to order the parts needed to fix the problem. When repairing the problem make sure to remove all power the the unit and to wear gloves is possible, as there are many sharp edges in close quarters that will butcher you hands in no time.

The other fan that can cause noise is the evaporator fan. While this fan too can get worn and become noisy, it also can sometimes start to hit ice that is building up because of a problem with the defrost system of the refrigerator. Checkout my tips about defrost problems if you find a build up of ice and the fan is hitting the ice and making noise. This fan can also be oiled if needed, and it will also wear out and need to be replace occasionally. This fan usually will go off when the door is opened, so sometimes it makes it difficult to figure out exactly what is happening. By holding the door switch in manually, you can get the fan to run and troubleshoot it more easily. Make sure to remove all power before trying to service the fan. Spinning fan blades do not play nice with your hands!

For many refrigerators you will have to remove some covers or even the whole bottom of the freezer to get to this fan for replacement. Checking the exploded views at appliance parts websites can give you an idea of where the fan is located and what must be removed to get to it for replacement.

Both of these fans and the associated parts are available for most refrigerators online. Look for them at the appropriate spots in the exploded views of the units.

How to Buy Appliance Parts Online

Smeg FAB28QRI thermostat not restarting fridge unless I hit side of fridge! Do I need a new thermostat?

It could be a loose wire on the terminal of the compressor. Also check for loose wires on the thermostat. If that is ok, the thermostat could be bad because it is a temperature controlled switch that turns the compressor on or off.

Fridge freezer alarm going & turning from blue to red

Possible there is some issues with the control panel and must be taken out to be confirmed. It can also be some loose connection on the connectors or the lamp holders.
Also check the wiring to the board.

My mini fridge is a big freezer.

It is the temperature sensor. It is normally attached to the evaporator itself (the freezer part that gets cold).

My Magic Chef mini fridge temperature trouble

That can be very difficult to do with a mini refrigerator. There is just not enough separation between the freezer and the refrigerator.

You will likely just have to find a compromise setting and accept the results.

My daughter's mini fridge has a freezer compartment. Her issue is, if she turns it up high enough so the freezer freezes, the fridge compartment also freezes everything; if she turns it down so that the...

This is a drawback of most mini-fridges. Start by defrosting everything. Then fill ice cube trays with water and keep lowering the setting until the water freezes. Just go a little lower, no more. Fridge should not freeze food. If the fridge stays closed all the time food will freeze. Also if the freezer element gets ice buildup it must be defrosted. Not automatic like home fridge. Most kids today weren't born when the last fridges that had to be defrosted were in service.
