Sounds like you need to adjust the valves. do a google search with your engine model number and "valve adjustment".

It sounds to me like a very loose belt or very worn out belt and also an adjustment problem.

SOURCE: Craftsman 42 inch riding mower. Runs great

how old is your plug? try cleaning and regapping it or replacing it at any rate make sure it is gapped correctly also make sure there is no rust dust or debris is on flywheel or coil also the flywheel keyway does more than hold the flywheel in place it servs as a timing pin and sometimes the slightest wear on it can cause the machine to start hard but otherwise run great good luck hope you find the problem.

SOURCE: Craftsman 19.5 riding mower starts runs quits no power

When you let it sit did you remove all the fuel or add a additive? If you did not then I would recommend that you remove all the fuel and add brand new fuel to your system. Gasoline only last for about 3 to 4 months before it will start to go bad and this sounds like your problem

SOURCE: white smoke coming out of mower

It sounds as though you are losing power (electrical power); see if charging the battery fully allows it to run longer or if charging the battery helps.

My bolens riding lawn mower was working great til i hit a low spot with longer grass it got real loud than shut off, when i tried to start it it will start turning over than pop real loud a couple tim

Try starting this without the blades engaged. Bottoming out will affect the deck but not the motor. In fact, remove the drive belt for the mower altogether and see if the engine runs fine. If this is the case then you have to look at where the damage is on the deck.

Starts but wont run and shuts down in seconds

Read entire posting before doing anything else first.
I discovered what the problem was, after changing spark plugs, fuel filter and air filter (At this point the mower would not start at all):
1. Checking for spark. I got spark out of both plug wires. The modules were OK.
2. Checking for fuel flow. Only small amount of fuel coming out of fuel pump. I changed the fuel pump. (I bought a Briggs and Stratton for $22.50 instead of a Kohler for $60.00. Same fuel filter!)
It ran fine for 10 min. then quit again!
I loosened the gas cap and it has ran fine since then, by keeping the gas cap loose. I will replace the gas cap.
Note: It was difficult to find the problem, since I replaced the filter and removed the vapor lock, so it ran for awhile. I then checked the fuel pump and removed the vapor lock, so it ran for awhile. I would suggest that people with similar problems, loosen the gas cap to see if that works first!

My briggs and stratton mower runs rough but when I toggle choke on and off it runs better for awhile

have to use choke means fuel problem. Check your fuel cap vent, fuel filter. Fuel solenoid opening with key turn on. Remove hose from carb.and see fuel runs out.

I was mowing the lawn, and I ran over a dirt *****. Now the engine will not start. It also sounds like something is loose inside. I hear a few clunking sounds when I pull the cord. Do I need to take...

Yoy can try tightening the blade bolt. i know it sounds funny but if the blade bolt is loose (or even alittle loose) the blade balance throws off the engine balance and can cause it to
1 not start
2 make loud clunking noises when trying to start
3 make a real racket if it does start

try flipping the lawn mower over and just tighten the bolt that holds the blade in place.
That should fix your problem.

5.5 Briggs & Stratton push mower running too loud

It could be the govenor spring. Get the model number, type and code and take it to a small engine parts store and get a new one. A new spring will slow down the rpm's and it wont be that loud. Make sure you remember how the spring was hooked up.

Let me know if this helps.
