The batteries need charging and when you plug in the charger and the power is on the lights wil flash indicating that the charger is plugged in. Now look at the rear of the chair near where the charger cord plugs into the chair and you should see a voltmeter. With the charger plugged in the voltmeter will indicate about 5-6 amps and after charging overnight the voltmeter should be reading 0 amps. If when you plug in the charger cord and the voltmeter indicates 0 amps then I would suspect that the charger is not working or that the fuse is blown in the charger circuit. The only way to see if the batteries charge would be to borrow or find an offboard charger that will plug into the charger port located under the front of the joystick and after charging for 10-12 hours see if the battery level lights show full charge Hope this helps
when you plug in the charger do you get any amp reading on the meter located at the rear of the chair near where the charger cord plugs into the chair. When you plug in the cord the meter should deflect and read 6 amps or so. If you aren't getting any deflection of the amp meter then either the batteries are dead or the charger is bad. If you have a voltmeter you can set it to 200 volts dc and plug the leads into the charger port located under the front of the joystick Plug the leads into the 2 outter holes of the port with the charger plugged into the wall you should be reading 27-30 volts. Unplug the charger and you will be reading the battery voltage and fully charged they should read 25-27+ volts. If you aren't reading 25-27 volts without the charger plugged in you will need new batteries( anything less than 10 volts will not let the chair turn on) if you aren't getting 27-30 volts with the charger plugged in then the charger is bad and you can get or borrow an off-board charger and charge the chair thru the joystick port Hope this helps
the batteries are not charged and need to be replaced. The reason you have lights is because the charger is supplying power to the chair and the chair will not move when the charger is plugged in because of the inhibit function. Replace the batteries and make sure you charge before use Hope this helps
You do not need to unplug the large 9 pin beau plug in the rear or the smaller 3 pin molex plug when you charge the chair. Do not unplug them or you will not charge the chair.
Use your charging cord as you describe "plug it into the front, plug it into the wall and charge, then unplug the charger cord and GO". Hope this helps.
After you changed the batteries, did the power chair sit unused for several weeks? It sounds more like a battery or fuse issue than a charger issue. If there are blinking lights when you try to turn the power chair on (not while attached to the charger), or it comes on then goes back off by itself quickly, there may be something else going on. 1- The green light on the charger is telling you that the batteries are not accepting any more power, either they are fully charged or they have oxidized/gone solid from sitting without being put on the charger for too long. 2-The scrolling lights on the controller when the charger is plugged in just confirms that the chair is connected to the charger, so it sounds like everything is connected properly and working. The horn will work fine when it is attached to the charger as it is getting power from the wall outlet. 3- If it was a fuse issue, the lights would not come on at all when the charger is NOT attached, even after the battery has been fully charged, which is what it sounds like is going on. The fuses can blow if you operate the chair on a slick surface or one of the drive tires spin out. The batteries will be fully charged but because the circuit is not complete, the chair will not power on.
I recommend checking the fuses and changing them if necessary. You are in luck because this is a relatively easy and inexpensive fix as they are standard automotive fuses found at any auto parts store or even Walmart for around $2 each (you need 2). The fuses are located inside the gray battery covers under the seat, attached to the leads connected to the battery cables. The straps holding the covers on the batteries are tight, you may want to use a flat head screwdriver to help release the clips. While you are down there, inspect the tread on the tires, if it is worn or slick it may need to be replaced for safety. I hope this information is helpful to you- good luck!
If you have an on-board charger for your power chair this outlet is for your charger cord. One end of the AC cord plugs into the wall outlet and the other end plugs into the trapezoid shape outlet on the side of the chair. This is the same shaped AC cord used to power computers and other devices. You can buy one a most hardware stores and places like Radio Shack. If you are using an off board charger which plugs into the front of the joystick (round plug)to charge the chair, then you don't need to use the on-board one and you don't need another AC cord. Hope this helps.
If you plug the charger into the wall, turn on the power switch and the light comes on, the charger should be working properly. Here is a way to test it-
Attach the charger that came with the power chair to the power chair controller firmly and turn the power chair on, while the charger is running. What should happen:the lights on the controller will scroll back and forth. If this does NOT happen and you can confirm the charger is turned on, the charger handle is fully seated inside the controller receptacle and the wall outlet has power, then the charger may have a problem and needs to be replaced.
If the charger is OK, then there may be a problem with the batteries. Here are some sypmtoms:
1-You connect the charger but the light on the charger never goes red, it just stays green.
2-You connect the charger but the light goes from red to green VERY fast.
3-The charger light goes from red to green but when you disconnect the charger and press the power button on the controller, you only have one flashing red light, or the batteries drain within just a few minutes of use.
4-The power chair has been stored or sitting idle for several months.
5- The power chair has been connected to the charger 24-7 for several months.
Any of the above examples indicates that the batteries are oxidized or damaged and will most likely need to be replaced. The MPV5 takes two, U1 12 volt 33 amp batteries which can be purchased at any battery warehouse store like Interstate Batteries or Batteries Plus.
Good luck!
You will need to connect the charger that was issued with the power chair to a working electrical outlet (do not use an extension cord or power bar/strip), turn it on and connect the other end to the power chairs' charging receptacle. Keep it connected for 8-12 hours or until the light on the charger indicates the batteries are charged. If the charger indicates the batteries are charged but the charge does not last more than 1-2 hours, they batteries may have gone bad, are worn out and need to be replaced. Good luck!
Firstly, it is bad news to use an extension cord with the charger as it can get very hot. It will sometimes take 8-12 hours to get a full charge on the batteries. If the light does not go to green on the charger, the batteries may be damaged and not able to take a charge. This is especially true if the Power chair was stored after your father in law died; the gel in the batteries may have gone solid. The lights on the controller will go left to right then back if the charger is connected properly.
The brake release knobs both need to be in the UP/DRIVE position for the motors to engage.
