Darryl, I suggest finding a distributor of the radio or newer models and ask them. If nothing else, they may be able to put you in contact with a customer with that unit who could help. Don't ask them for customer's contact information, ask them to see if the customer would be willing to send a copy to the distributor so they could send it or a copy to you.

Your VHF lives in a fairly harsh marine environment and you're correct in thinking "tuner cleaner" might be the answer. I believe that your volume control is simply dirty. I would suggest using silicone spray (WARNING- Use ONLY the safe for plastics type.) to clean it. I've had good success just removing the control knob and blasting the pot, working it back and forth. You MIGHT wish to do this with the power off however, unless you have a great set of earplugs.
You mentioned that you have a handheld VHFas well. Any chandlery will carry an adapter (about $10) to let you hook your portable to the big antenna should a problem with your marine VHF arise. We've had the occasion once to have to do this and we were glad we carry the handheld aboard at all times.
