My microwave has begun to beep each morning starting from 2:00am -2:30am . When I check the unit the display has this on it --SE-- , Most of the buttons on the keypad will not work, I have unpluged the unit . It comes back on I reset the clock & everthing is fine , but about 20 minutes later the process starts again. I have found if I unplug the unit & just leave it for the rest of the night the next morning when I replug the unit in & set the time everything. works fine the rest of the day , However the problem starts back that evening again around 2:00am . Is th --SE-- a error code , What is causing this problem? Could it have anything to do with the change from day light saving time , since it seems to start each evening around 2:00am
I have the same "SE" problem. After reading this thread here, I realise it's likely the keypad problem, which explains the microwave's behaviour (no key was working).
So there were two possibilities. (1)keypad failure and (2) bad connection.
Obviously the easiest thing I could start with is to clean the connection. So I first take the cover off. Behind the keypad is a circuit board. In addition to a few connections between the circuit board and other parts of the microwave, there is a ribbon connecting the keypad to the circuit board.
Loose the plastic on the connection, pull the ribbon out from the socket. I then used spirit to clean the exposed copper connections. Put every thing back to place.
Voila, it's working again and we have been living happily ever after.....
Best as I can tell the SE or 5E error on these Samsung Microwaves is a data entry pad error. I was able to fix mine by removing the pad, cleaning the connectors, and then plugging the pad back into place. I made a YouTube video that shows what I did to fix my microwave. Here is a link to that video: http://tinyurl.com/SamsungSE
Hold the start and cancel buttons down at the same time until you hear beeping. Release and it should be reset. I was about to either spend another 250 to repair it or purchase a new one until I tried this on my own. Soooooooo angry that it was not suggested by Samsung but sooooooo relieved. Hope this helps everyone.
Thank you very much! Worked like a charm! Samsung's website was pretty much useless!
MINE JUST STARTED AND I CANT GET IT TO WORK...
thank u it worked
Thanks, It works fine now. Just needed to reset it.

I have samsung mw123h microwave and it has the "SE" problem. Here how I fix it just open cover and strip the main pcb out and clean the legs of eproms or ic at the back of the display on the main pcb. It has short between the legs from cockroroch's shits. Now It working fine........
I had the "SE" problem also. SAMSUNG techie told me that it
is because of moisture condensation on one of the PCBs inside. Once it dries up, it works fine gain. Nothing to fix in this case - just wait for the weather to change, maybe.
There are two threads about this here. The other is at http://www.fixya.com/support/t132122-setup_not_working
I still believe the problem is related to daylight savings. Samsung has updated their FAQ to now include the SE code (wasn't there last month when we first had the error)
From Samsung FAQ:
"Some models are equipped with a sensor that can automatically adjust the
oven's heating time based on the amount of steam in the oven. If your
microwave is displaying E1, E4, or E5, there may be an issue with the gas sensor.
For an E1 error, press the Cancel button and check on the food.
Other microwaves do not give specific error messages and just display "8888"
on the LED. If you get this error message, your microwave needs service.
If
the message is either ERROR or E-6, it indicates
a mechanical fault.
For all error indications, including the SE or 5E error, try
unplugging the microwave from the outlet for at least ten minutes and then plug it
back in. If
the error persists, the microwave may require service. Please
use our ASC Locater to find your nearest Authorzied
Service Center."
My microwave buttons locked automatically how to unlock it
Hi, I had the same problem and in my case the fix was easy. First the root cause: there is a ribbon cable inside the microwave that connects the control panel to the keypad, which is kind of folded. Over time, condensation will make two pieces of the ribbon cable stuck together, causing short circuit. The solution is to separate the pieces and put a piece of paper in between. First you need to access the control panel by unscrewing the top grill of the microwave. After removing the top grill, you will see a screw holding the control panel to the oven. Just unscrew that one and remove the control panel. You will then see the ribbon cable. Inspect whether it is folded and the two sides are stuck. If yes, just separate them and put a piece of paper in-between.
I think I know what might be happening. If you hold the pause/cancel button for 8 seconds the "SE code" will appear. I noticed and so have others that it seems to usually happen at night when it's usually colder in the house. The keypad membrane might be contracting causing this problem. So as William E Miller said above the keypad membrane is probably the solution to the problem.
This is really odd. I would first suspect a setting under "My Choice" (press "My Choice" then 1, 2, 3, or 4 and check settings.
Or maybe a failing sensor.
But overriding all of this is the fact that it happens at roughly the same time each day, which is why I go back to suspecting an odd setting. Nothing in the owner's manual refers to this.
So I would recommend contacting Samsung for assistance. 1-800-SAMSUNG (1-800-726-7864), or see http:WWW.SAMSUNGSUPPORT.COM

I have a Samsung OTR Microwave which I purchased Sept 2010, model number smh9151w. I am getting the error code SE and my microwave will not work at all. My microwave is out of warranty however I contacted Samsung directly and they are going to replace my control panel free of charge under there epidemic warranty. If you are having this problem contact Samsung directly they will help you.
I saw on another site that sometimes the ribbon cable will have one of the traces short to another. The fix was to separate the ribbon cables with a piece of paper as an insulator and tape in place. I tried it and have not had the error recur. It has been over a month since I tried the fix and the oven has been working fine. Prior to the fix, I was getting the S5 error within ten minutes of plugging my oven in. The fix only takes a few minutes to accomplish. Remove a couple of screws to remove the grill, remove a screw to remove the touch pad, unplug the cable, separate the ribbon cable, slide a piece of paper between the cables and reassemble. It's also possible that the cable had a bad connection and unplugging it was all that was needed.
My MO showing error 2 and 3 while i am connecting it.....
FYI
The site "www.microwavedisplay.com" no longer exists. The "how to replace your touchpad" document can be found at:

I am done buying anything that has the word Samsung on it. We have had every Samsung appliance (front load washer/dryer, microwave and dishwasher) we have purchased repaired or replaced multiple times in less than 2 years.
The paper between the ribbon is the trick! So easy!
Wow! White eraser trick worked. Incredible. Used this link to get me to where I could actually figure out what was going on.
Thanks!
PLEASE VISIT www.ablekeypads.com
They should simply recall it.

I tried everything suggested and it didn't work. However, i took a trip to my local appliance repair store thinking i could get them to replace the membrane......the tech suggested i go home and try a "white eraser" (has to be white) on the ribbon leads into the plastic clip. i did just that.......works perfectly.
i know it sounds crazy but it worked.....i was having sc code issues and the microwave wouldn't work. i cleaned those leads with a white eraser and it works perfectly.
Contacted Samsung as my microwave did the same thing after 1 year and a couple of month. Out of Warranty, of course!2 things here:1. Bought it with Amex so automatically doubled my warranty by another year.2. Contacted Samsung over the phone (not internet), and they said that there is a grace period of 6 months past the originally warranty. Phew! Their coming to fix the problem. Yee-ha!

Usually answered in minutes!
Same problem except flickering in tube and display. Eventually fried the capacitor. Replaced it but continues to flicker. Does anyone have any ideas?
We've been having this exact same problem and
it's driving us crazy. It doesn't necessarily always start at 2am (not
sure) but it's always showing --SE-- in the morning when we wake up. I
searched and searched for the --SE-- (or
perhaps it's --5E--?) code but couldn't find anything until I saw
this. I called Samsung's customer support and they said they didn't know anything about that error and would
have to send out a technician. Unfortunately, we've had our unit for
over a year (even though we just installed it with our kitchen remodel a few months ago) so it's out of warranty. It seems to be getting more and
more frequent. Pressing
cancel twice makes it go away temporarily (sometimes a few minutes,
sometimes a few hours). It actually started happening on
October 28th, which is the day Daylight savings SHOULD HAVE occurred if
it wasn't switched to the first weekend in November this year. After reading MicrowaveSvc's suggestion of checking the settings, we found that "My Choice" #4 is "Daylight Savings Time". We'll try turning this off and see if it doesn't freak out again tonight. (Fingers Crossed)... perhaps it's just a firmware issue.
I have been having the same exact problem. Only thing is with TWO different microwaves! Long story short.....Bought a brand new house that came with Whirlpool appliances. Month 13 and the microwave goes out giving a SE or 5E code. The store the appliances came from, the builder nor Whirlpool would do nothing since it was past 12 months. I got the store to send a repair person out to fix it and was told the control panel was fried. He installed a new control panel that only had a 90 day warranty and charged me $272.50. At about day 100....same thing all over again! Bought a new Samsung microwave and installed it.....this was 11 months ago. I boxed up the Whirlpool microwave and put it in the garage. Thanksgiving Day, the Samsung does the same thing. After reading the owners manual, I unplugged the unit and tried a different outlet...everything was fine. Plugged it back into it's original outlet and again everything was fine. Now every couple of days it throws up that SE or 5E code. Then I got to thinking about the Whirlpool microwave. Went to the garage and pulled it out of the box and plugged it in. Guess what? It worked fine!! I just turned off the daylight savings time option on the Samsung. I'm hoping this does the trick. Now I'm about to go check the Whirlpool and see if it has the same type of daylight savings setting. This has just baffled me. I even called the electrician that wired my house, thinking it might be an electrical issue, and he was just as baffled as I am.
You can add me to the list of people who have the "SE" problem. I didn't notice this until the switch over from daylight savings time as well. Also, it occurs around 2 - 3 A.M. in the morning. Strange how Samsung built the thing but can't explain its own codes!
Continues to flash SE - tried the daylight savings trick, seemed to work for a while and now the problem's back. After discovering that when the door was left open, the beeping stopped and the SE did not appear. I left the door open for approximately one hour and when my wife closed it, the problem was fixed, temporarily. We'll see what happens tonight.
Same problem here. Funny it just started about 1 month ago. Sometimes it works but other times it doesn't. Called the Samsung support and got the same answer. Unplug it for 10 minutes and plug it back in. Didn't work. Even left it unpluugged for 24 hours same result. Support said that I would need to contact a technician as I bought it in 2005, warranty expired. What I cannot figure out that all of a suden it will work. Frustrated!!!!
I was astonished to find so many postings describing the same problem I am having with my microwave. I have had the Samsung SMH7178STE microwave for 15 mos now and it has begun beeping 4 times and giving the error code, "-SE-". At times this has occurred at around 2:00am-3:00am, but not always.
Steps that I have taken to resolve the problem:
1. Called Samsung twice and there only suggestion - call in a service technician. Easy solution, but one that will cost anywhere from $140+. Bummer for a microwave that only cost $300 and is just out of warranty. How ironic.
2. I tried Samsung's suggestion of unplugging the MW for 10' and plugging it back in. That's a temporary fix (usually <24hrs), but does not resolve the problem.
3. I followed the suggestion in this thread of turning off the Daylight Savings feature, but that only worked for 12 hrs and the MW errored again (-SE-).
4. I also tried the "door trick". But, the MW error occurred even when the door was left open.
In the past MW's lasted for years and were usually upgraded before they actually died. This is not right. Samsung should offer a better solution than "call a service rep". Especially since this error occurs just outside the warranty period, how convenient for Samsung.
At this point I'm waiting for the service guy to come fix my MW. I'll let you all know what the fix is and how much it costs.
Our microwave is doing the same thing. We usually unplug it at night so we at least don't have to listen to it beep. It started doing this about a month after the warranty expired.
Same problem here..SE error. All the functions have been locked out.
Called the Samsung support and got the same answer. Unplug it for 10 minutes and plug it back in... Had no luck. Even left it unpluugged for 24 hours same result. Luckily my MW is just a month old and under warranty, have to take it back to the repair center.....Frustrated!!!
samsung ce945g i cannot operate my microwave its buttons get locked automatically how to unlock it
I also have this SE error code. It started after the vent came on because the pot on top of my s
tove was really steaming. We couldn't turn off the vent, then about 2 hours later the SE code came on and kept beeping. After pushing different buttons and opening/closing door it stopped until about 2:00 am, then the whole keypad quit working. We unplugged it for 48 hours, but still nothing. Of course 1 year warranty ran out in 4 months ago.
6 mos after my previous post on this MW issue, my MW is WORKING FINE!! Go figure. I never had it repaired and the failure/"SE" notification have no longer appeared. I do not understand this, nor have I ever seen this (an autorepairng MW ;-))
Posibilities:
1) cold weather??
2) the steam issue others have talked about?
I'm not sure, but curious to see if next winter (or daylight saving time) this issue arises. Just an FYI, no real sol'n offered, sorry.
Samsung microwave oven, only about one year old, is not working, and giving me a flashing code: 5E. What is the problem?
I have the same problem on my KENMORE. It was made by SAMSUNG.
Any Kenmore with model number starting with 401 is made by samsung.
It started also at about 2:30AM . Sounds like a DEFECT to me since there are so many complaints on the same issue. Had mine for 1 year-figures no warranty anymore.NEVER a Samsung made product ever again!
Hi,
I have the same issue here ... this SE error is driving me crazy ... please if someone reached to a solution share it with me, even if it means to call warranty service (which is still valid but take ages for them to come).
I have the SMH7178STEW model but the same SE problem - usually in the early am, yes I've learned teh unplug trick on my own. sounds like this is a defective unit and should be repaired for free or replaced. Any ideas on who to contact to get this done? Who is the consumer watchdog for these kinds oof issues - its not a safety proiblem (unless you count getting up at 3 am and walking to the kitchen it he dark while cussing and then stubbing your toe)
I have this problem to. Mine goes back to the SE code immediatly though? My microwave is only a few months old, and gets very little use.
SMH8165STE Mine started peeping last night. Unplug and plug back in good for 5 minutes. Unplugged overnight. Thought it was good but several hours latter peeping with 5E error code. Unplug from electricity and remove (3) screws. There are (2) screws holding top trim in. When screws are removed my trim could slide left and gently pulling remove. The Control panel has (1) screw. When remove gently slide control panel up to remove. Disconnect (5) quick disconnects. Place on counter and squirt electrical cleaner on both the male and female connections (in microwave control panel opening). Reassemble, secure all trim and plug unit back in. Hopefully your microwave is back up and running.
its the ribbon connector to the key pad and the ground ribbon to the key pad. The ground ribbon is folded under the metal shroud under the main board, which is removed by two screws, carefully clean both of these ribbons and replace, also clean the connection to the screw and metal it touches that holds the entire keypad back onto the microwave, this completes the ground connection. This should fix your problem, make sure you unplug the unit before you do anything and dont turn it back on until you have the ground screw in place from the keypad to the micro wave
Having same problem anyone have answer yet.
08/14/2013 Samsung is fixing my SE error today even though my microwave is 4 years old.
