My well used mixer, as of this morning, operates on speed 1 like it is 10 and only gets faster from there! Throws everything out of the bowl ... is this something that I can look to repair myself?
You will need to look under the back cover and make sure that the lever is moving the speed control plate out and in at the bottom. Out = fast. If that is moving freely and there are no broken pieces inside that back cover (springs, brass governor bits) then replacing the small pcb at the top with the 4 wires coming out of it should solve the problem.

How comfortable are you with electrical parts? With the mixer UNPLUGGED and the switch ON measure resistance between the (flat) plug pins. If it's infinite (no meter movement) which is to be expected, there is an open circuit. The switch could be open or the wire to the switch could be disconnected (improbable) or the motor could be burned out and open (not very probable).
Maybe you could take the switch to a shop and have it tested.
This is not really a solution, just step 1.

Pull the back off and there will be two screws at the top of the Speed Control Plate and a 3rd screw at the bottom. Tighten the top two screws down. [email protected]. Let me know if it works.

This sounds like an issue of beater to bowl adjustment, which can come out of alignment naturally over time and with use of the machine.
If the flat beater is striking the bottom of your bowl, this may cause the locking mechanism to loosen and may cause the mixing head to "bounce" during use.
Your Use and Care Guide will cover the "beater to bowl adjustment," which you can do at home in a few minutes with a flathead screwdriver.

I think you have a K45SS. It sounds like there is a problem with one of the gears, probably the worm gear. The worm gear is designed to be the first to fail if the mixer has struggled with a heavy dough or other difficult to mix substance. The best way to establish the cause will be to open the head up and check the gears for signs of damage.

You can try adjusting the speed control as shown in section 6 of the service manual:

Also remove and clean the brushes as shown in the same manual pg 8 fig. #30.
