Schematic information on Pilot Penny-Giles controller for Pride jazzy or Hoveround MPV-4 etc.

Am trying to ressurect a Penny-Giles PILOT joystick power controller that fits a Hoveround MPV4 Power Chair. The unit is not activating the regulators to turn on the unit. If anyone has had experience to component level, any information would be useful. Thanks.

I've never had much luck getting information like this for most joysticks, and have never gotten it for Penny+Giles stuff. You may have the best luck looking for a used replacement joystick on eBay or Craig's List.

The Hoveround MPV-4 had 2 different types of battery connectors. The old type had threaded edges that you would plug in, then screw them tight. The new type has a release clip on one side. They switched from the old to the new because of continuity problems such as this. Which type of battery connector do you have?

SOURCE: How do I charge the Hoveround mpv 4? I plugged the

Firstly, it is bad news to use an extension cord with the charger as it can get very hot. It will sometimes take 8-12 hours to get a full charge on the batteries. If the light does not go to green on the charger, the batteries may be damaged and not able to take a charge. This is especially true if the Power chair was stored after your father in law died; the gel in the batteries may have gone solid. The lights on the controller will go left to right then back if the charger is connected properly.
The brake release knobs both need to be in the UP/DRIVE position for the motors to engage.

You will need tie downs to the power chair. It is a metal piece the fits over the chair post and sits under the seat and had two metal loops to hook on to. The Hoveround field technician will install it for you.You need to order the tie downs from Hoveround, your insurance will most likely NOT cover the cost.

My jazzy blinks 7 time what does that mean?

Possible Joystick Trip
A joystick trip is indicated. Make sure that the joystick is in the center position before switching on the Pilot.

May need a trip to a service centre to plug the diagnostic box in to check for errors.

Jazzy select contol panel all leds flash 7 times. what does that indicate?

This problem may depend on which main controller your chair has fitted. It should be a Penny & Giles GC controller. US versions should have a GC3 whilst here in the UK, it would be fitted with a GC2. However, the diagnostic flash codes for these two controllers should be the same. The reason im slightly confused is that you say 5 flashes mean your charger is connected at power up, when in fact it should be a Right Motor Wiring Fault. 9 flashes is indeed a Solenoid Brake Fault, or in other words, the wheelchair is in 'Free Wheel' as you have described. Therefore, IF your controller is in fact a Penny & Giles GC, 7 flashes would mean a Joystick fault. There is not much you can do to diagnose this other than checking connections between the Joystick and main controller. If these are OK, it is likely that a new Joystick controller will be required as having these fixed is usually not cost affective. Hope this is of some help to you.

Hi Tom,

The redel cable made by Penny and Giles Drive Technology is available from them in a number of custom lengths. The only limiting factor is that you need to have a dealer account with them. Check out their website at pgdt.com.
I think you can order a custom length at The After Market Group at aftermarketgroup.com. They should be able to take your order and turn it around into a custom order from Penny and Giles. The other alternative is to order the longest stock length which I think is about 5 feet and splice several together.
You can do a web search for redel cable and order the length you need and make it yourself for a lot cheaper than going through medical equipment suppliers. The retail cost of a standard 3, 4, or 5 foot cable is over $120 so you will reap great savings by doing some research on-line.
Hope this helps.

Pilot Joystick is fried Type # D49637/8A. Can I get replacement? What is the cost? Guy

The Pride Jazzy 1115 originally came with the Pilot controller (Pride part # CTLDC 1030) and it has served you well. The manufacturer,Penny and Giles, is no longer manufacturing the Pilot. Fortunately, Pride is providing a new VSI controller 4 key 50 (70) Amp for the Jazzy 1115 (Pridepart number CTLDC1270 ) (manufacturer P & G part #D50148) for a retail cost of $1607. The new VSI controller will also need a new joystick mounting bracket assembly part #FRMASMB 4767 retail $30.
It is possible to have your Pilot controller rebuilt. There are many rebuild facilities that will sell you a reconditioned joystick (VSI or Pilot) for about $500 that will work on your unit. You can opt to send in yours for repair or reconditioning or purchase a reconditioned unit. Try MonsterScooterParts.com, TheAftermarketGroup.com, Wheelchair Wizard in Citrus Heights, CA.
The Pilot controller was a very robust unit but very expensive for Penny and Giles to manufacture. The new replacement VSI controller actually performs better and is more streamlined and smaller. The VSI pushbutton overlay (4 key) is very easy to use, The pushbuttons control on/off/speed increase/decrease. The replacement is easy to do as long as you remember to order the new mounting bracket assembly with the VSI because the old Pilot bracket will not work. All it takes to install is 2 screws to mount the control on the bracket, 2 plugs to connect, and 2 cable ties to secure the wiring. You may want to spray electrical contact cleaner into the plug receptacles on the electronics tray to clean them before plugging in the new parts. Hope this helps.

Pride 1121 wheelchair led 8bars flashing wont unlock batteries new ,the connections good. had just unloaded it ran it over a bump then it started flashing. Controler is bad or what? contiuity from motors...

trent618,

The 8 bar flashing lights indicate a possible control system trip. Without a serial Number or knowing which controller system you powerchair has, I will cover the common used controller systems for the model of powerchair you have.

If you have the Pilot or VSI control system the control system detects an internal problem within its self or the joystick, and I've seen it a couple of times when both the controller and joystick have an internal problem.

If you have the Pilot + or VR2 control system the control system detects an internal problem within its self and/or the joystick and/or a communications error between the joystick and controller. I've seen it once when the controller, joystick and cable between the joystick and controller being deffective. Due to the flashing lights and you have a Pilot + or VR2 there is a good chance the problem is the cable between the joystick and controller.

The possible solutions and repairs above will require the need for an authorized person to perform the tasks. Give the company that sold you the power chair a call, or anyone or different company which works on power mobility products as the part(s) needed will only be sold to authorized deallers or service providers.

Hope this helps, if so, please respond to this solution which will help others who may have the same question.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Joystick on hoveround MPV 4 won't work. Are there

Check that the wiring leading to the jowstick hasn't knocked loose. It may have come out or just be out of place. You may have to get a new wire. Check the place you got it from for more details, go there in person or check the site.
Hope this helps!
