Keeping me up at night!!

I have a McCULLOCH MS1432, took it apart to replace fuel lines, now, it starts and idles fine, but, the trigger works in reverse now, I have to pull down to the trigger to engage the throttle lock, all parts seem to be in the right place, unless I'm missing one, not sure how this could happen. Now all I get is idle or full throttle when pulling down on trigger. Keeping me up at night trying to figure this out, any ideas???

It sounds like something got switched in the reassembly. It happens. Here is the service manual to try and figure it out. Let me know if that helps, or you need some more help. Good luck.

SOURCE: 39cc McCulloch chain saw

I have the same exact saw as you and I was having the same troubles except I had to keep pumping the primer bulb to keep it running. I didn't want to go by a new saw because I knew I could fix it, as I am skilled in small engines, but have never actually taken a chainsaw apart. I dug into it and found that the fuel line that comes out of the side of the carburater and leads into the fuel tank with the fuel finlter on the end looked cracked a little. So i trimmed the end of it off and thought that it would work. It didn't! So I took it back apart (took the carb all the way out) and found that that fuel line was totally rotted underneath the carb and every time I pressed the primer bulb, fuel shot out of a large crack where the fuel line was bent. After I replaced that everything was running great. If you have any more problems, feel free to contact me. John

SOURCE: McCulloch 3200 takes many pulls to start, runs good when does.

I don't think I can help, but normal starting procedure for me is to put choke on, pull on recoil until it kicks over once. shut off choke and restart. Sounds like you have fixed almost everything & adjusted mag right. Rick

  • The hose in the tank with the filter on the free end connects directly to the carburetor input connection.
  • If the saw is equipped with a primer bulb, an output line from the carburetor connects to the suction side of the primer (once the bulb is collapsed it draws fuel from the tank through the carburetor to refill as it inflates).
  • The pressure side of the primer returns displaced fuel to the tank as it is depressed.
Take lots of notes and a few digital photographs to help with reassembly.

SOURCE: Have a Mac 3214, fuel lines were rotten, replaced

The fuel metering needle in the lower carburetor chamber may have a bad rubber tip or the rubber diaphragm may be hard or cracked. McCullough fuel tanks vent through the cap (it should not have a gasket). Gravity plays no part in the carburetor fuel volume. Remove the spark plug (ignition off) and pull the engine through a few times without the choke on, but the throttle wide open to remove excess fuel in the crankcase (no smoking during this procedure). Make sure the plug is dry when you put it back. Hope this helps!

RE McCulloch (gas 2 cycle) chain saw. No prior problems. Despite model year, I have not used it all that much, but over past 3 days, was running fine, but then started to run oddly: When running for a few...

It could be a few things, initially it sounds like simple fuel starvation, remove the fuel filter in the tank and replace, check the fuel hoses, and the primer hoses if fitted for cracks or leakage.

It ran fine. put it up with fuel still in it.Would't start. took apart and cleaned carb. will run for just a short 5 seconds than nothing. have had apart put new baffle in carb. still same thing. what am I...

if no bad fuel or sludge is still in carb or tank you may have a leaking or bad pick up line. the little 1/4 inch pick up line that goes to the fuel tank do crack and go bad from time to time. good luck.

I have a McCulloch Bearcat. It sat all summer. I

Did you remove the old fuel?
Did you refuel it with a fresh oil/gas mix? Mixed to the oil suppliers recommended ratio.
The fuel that sat all summer probably contains ethanol. Ethanol draws moisture, moisture and the oil suspended in the fuel don't mix. The old fuel can be used in a 4 cycle engine. Try refueling with a fresh mix if that doesn't work we need to investigate further.
