2005 XC90 shifter is locked - can only shift between drive an neutral, can't put into park when i come to a complete stop. the key is also locked in the ignition

check the button that you push in on your shifter. will the shift button not go all the way back into the shifter like normal. can you pull it out toward the dash? be easy when doing so to keep from breaking it. something has broken inside the shifter and allows the button to come out too far. try sticking ur finger in the shifter behind the button and realign the button. the button should go all the way into the shifter when it is aligned. it's only a temporary fix but will get you home.

Transmission?

It may be the shifter lever bushing at the base of the shifter. To check you must remove the stick shift cover. With the stick exposed, push down and turn on the plate that holds the shifter shaft. It is spring loaded and may take some effort. ( Remove stick while in neutral) Pull the stick out of the trans where the stick shift pivots should be a rubber bushing about the size of a half dollar. I think you can only get this part at a Toyota dealer. Hope this helps !

Gear shifter

The shifter cable and linkage may be getting sticky. Locate the linkage and cable on the gear selector (transmission side under hood) and spray them with some PB Blaster or WD 40.

2005 grand am shifter problem

The shifter button on the shifter is released when you start up your car and step on the brake pedal. If you are having an intermittent problem, you may be having a shifter release solenoid issue. the shift solenoid is part of the brake light switch system so the problem can also be in the brake switch. If you do not know how to check it out, I would bring it to a reputable repair shop and have them check it out for you.
