Hi. Whilst the engine and casing are apart, you will need to gently pull out the cord from the recoil unit so that you have room to manoeuvre and jam or lock the cord to the mechanism of the recoil unit to prevent it recoiling back in. Gently align the casing to the engine assembly ensuring the recoil unit is orientated correctly (the screw holes need to align to the outer casing holes). Once mated together, pop a couple of screws in to keep the recoil unit and casing together and then you should be able to put tension on the recoil cord in order to unship it from it's 'jammed/locked' position and the whole unit should then recoil back in normally. Reassemble the machine. The whole procedure is tricky but the key is to ensure the cord is jammed or locked against the recoil unit to prevent it turning whilst mating the casing and engine back together. Make sure you have removed any cord from the combustion chamber (if you have placed any), otherwise you will not be able to rotate the recoil mechanism and ensure the spark plug is removed for safety. I did it last night with my RLT26CDS and it worked a treat!
Undo the screws holding the housing of the starter cord & remove the whole thing. Before continuing it may be wise to take a picture of the pulley & how its held on so you can put it together correctly. Inside you should see a removable clip attached to a moving nylon peg thing, remove this, then a washer, then remove the round plastic pulley that holds the cord. Remove the old cord. Thread one end of the new cord (ensure it's the same thickness) from the outside of the pulley through the hole so it comes out in the middle as it was before. Tie a knot in it, trim off any eccess cord & pull it back through, tucking the knot neatly into the place where the knot goes. Wrap the cord 3 or 4 times round the pulley & thread the loose end through the hole in the housing. Put the pulley back in the housing as it came off & replace the washer, peg & clip. Pull the cord to make sure it springs back ok. ***Now pull the chord right out & slowly let the spring pull it back in. Now thread your pull handle on right up to the housing, put a knot in it a bit further than this point so the spring holds the handle tight to the housing and its not dangling loose.DONT CUT THE ECCESS OFF YET Ensure youre happy with the length of cord when its pulled out If its too short, undo the knot, leave the pulley in place, use a thin screwdriver to pull the cord into the housing to wrap it round the pulley one more time (theres normally a notch cut out of the pulley to get the cord round between the pulley & housing) Now repeat from *** Now screw the housing back in place. It's easier to do than write!!!!
I assume that you are speaking of a pull start mechanism.
I can not imagine how to put a put pull starter back on "wound tight".
Your pulling on the cord tightens a spring which pulls the cord back in.
They go back together with the cord fully wound onto the spool.
Usually, I only take these apart to replace the cord.
Wind the new cord onto the spool without handle.
Reassemble, then pull out on the cord a little when attaching the handle to the cord.
This is the only way to get tension onto the spring at the fully retracted position because the catch for the spring is on the machine and the spring itself is on the underside what you are assembling.
If you do not wish to shorten the cord or replace it, then remove the handle, assemble enough to catch the spring, wind one turn tighter then feed rope through hole and reattach handle. Easier said than done.
If your spring is broken, then you will be needing a new one.

This works best with two people. Remove cover and pull cord will be inside cover. If your handle on pull cord is attatched to a metal ring up on the handle, you will need 8 foot of new pull cord.
With all the old cord removed, wind cord pulley 6 revolunations, now, have someone hold the pulley, while you string the new cord thru pulley and out the cord hole on cover. Be sure to put a knot on the end going thru pulley. Draw cord all the way thru and out of the cover. Attatch the handle and let it rewind. You will have extra cord, this will be used up going from engine up the handle. I hope this helps
It sounds like you have it back together correctly except for one issue. You did not put enough pre-load back in to the spring. Or in other words you didn't rewind the spring enough.
Normally you attach the cord to be rewound and turn or tighten the spring until the length of the cord is completely retracted on to the pulley. This problem usually happens because the unit is reinstalled at this point. What you need to do is turn it another 2 to 4 turns (depending on the pulley size), to place enough tension on the cord to fully retract. You may have to experiment with the number of turns to get it right because both the length of the new cord and pulley size influence this. If this still doesn't take care of the problem please let me know and I'll try and talk you through it.
take off the part the cord goes into and put the cord back into it its spring loaded probly kinda tricky its diffrent on each model but there should be a place to tie the the cord into and put it back together cord probly dry rotted if the cord is in really bad shape you can buy a complete replacement
remove the battery and power cord then open the system find the battery on the motherboard remove it carefully let it set out for 10 min. then put the battery back on the motherboard put the system back together replace battery and power cord cmos should be reset
Remove the bag emptor, then there is one screw ro remove where the cord goes into the side of the vac. Remove that cord cover, pull the cord end out, then replace it with a new cord. Put it back together again. The screw will either be a phillips head or a torx.
Open the cover and keep pushing back until it pops off, remove the on/off pedal(pry it up from the back), take out the 2 screws and then the cover over the motor and cord reel will come loose. You can go to sears.com, click on the parts link, put in your model # and a page comes up, you can select the main body to see it apart, and you can select the reel cord asm. The parts list and picture will come up, you can order thru that page. To replace the cord is tricky, use a allen wretch to put in one side of the reel and lock it down, maybe in a vise. Then you can start taking it apart, careful as not to let the allen wretch go or the spring will unwind, then you would have to replace it also. Repalce the cord then put it back together again. Print out the diagram of the reel so you know how it is put together.
