My 4 year old Maytag PAV 2300 AWW never agitates, but will spin sometimes, (one cycle only) then needs to wait 45 minutes to spin again. I have taken it apart and the trasmission's spindle's teeth looks fine and the bottom plastic agitator's teeth look fine as well.
I ran a cycle, with a small load of water, without all of the plastic agitator parts to watch if the metal spindle turned, which I am assuming is the top part of the transmission, and it did not turn. The spin cycle runs (ocassionally) with clothes and water in it, but never the agitator. The machine is running though and all of the water cycles adding water and draining normally on time.
I think the spin cycle running after waiting 45 minutes is especially strange. I don't know how that relates to the agitator never working????How can I tell if it is the transmission or the timer? Or could anything else be the problem and how can I diagnose it?
I really appreciate your expertise and my wife would really appreciate me fixing this thing,

Comment by brian s, posted on Oct 30, 2007Thank you for the response. I not sure if that is the problem because it does spin on the first cycle and that is after the agitation mode. The agitation mode never works, even when cold, during the first cycle.
If you will permit me, this is a list of the problems on each cycle, chronicologically;
Ok i might have to put this in a 2 part solution it might not be big enough to fit here
i hope this helped you in your washer it still is cheaper to repair than to replace
your washer blew out its thrust bearing which is called the brake
while you have the washer open grease the bearings and oil the motor you can get these same things and intstructions for this to do
this is the thrust bearing kit which you will need the instructions i will post the link and a copy of the pic

this is the link to the thrust bearing kit you need to replace to run dryer correctly

Ive never seen a Maytag washer, but I think know the principle. So! I think the motor turns in one direction to wash & the opposite direction to spin. Now, if the transmission is very stiff in the 'wash mode', that could be why its not washing. The motor could be overheating & the thermal trip in the motor cutting off the electricity supply hence having to wait 45 mins for it to cool.
Not too sure! However I think I am on the right track. Let me know please

If you have replaced the spring is the tub over to one side not in the center of the hole there is what they call a snumber ring on the bottom of the base the washer sets on that could be wore out but it is really hard to replace and you will need a special tool to compress the break
SOURCE: how to replace timer knob on Maytag PAV 2300 aww,
This is from another site but does a good job of explaining how to change your timer:
http://www.the-appliance-clinic.com/myttimer.html
The hardest part will be swapping the knob because you have to lift the top of it off and sometimes they can be fiesty.
WORDS OF CAUTION.
DO NOT pull all the wires off of the OLD timer. DO a ONE for ONE wire swap. i.e pull one wire from the old timer... and hook it up to the new one on the exact same terminal as the old timer.
