Good water flow from door dispenser but nothing into the icemaker , shutoff arm will not move down. Q? will unplugging the fridge overnite for 8 to 12 hours help

  • Bill Bedwell Mar 16, 2014

I had the same problem. I turned up the refrigiator tempature a couple of degrees and within 24 hours the ice maker begain to work. It told me that the water line to the ice maker must have been frozen. Regarding the regulating arm, it will automaticall drop once water runs into the ice make. It's designed like that...don't try to force it...it will be OK. Jushave some patience:)

SOURCE: I have model 106.56582500 w/ice maker.water will

HI. First, you will need to rule out any standard issues that will cause this. Check the internal, and external feed lines for any obstructions. Make sure that the internal lines are not frozen, or kinked. If the lines check out ok, move on to the water filter(if equipped).

In most units, there will be a filter, present. These devices are set to operate on a particular time frame. If their filtering limit is met, the filter will stop filtering water, thus, not allowing the fluid to flow, at all. Make sure that the filter is up to date. If you have verified that the filter is ok, move on to the water inlet valve assembly.

The water inlet valve is located behind your refrigerator. Find the water supply line coming into the valve and turn it off at the source (typically under the sink). Disconnect the supply line. Remove the screws that secure the inlet valve in place.

The water inlet valve is connected by two wires. Label the wire placement on the water inlet valve before disconnecting the wires. The wires are connected to the terminals with slip on connectors

Firmly pull the connectors off of the terminals (do not pull on the wire). You may need to use a pair of needle-nose pliers to Remove the connectors. Inspect the connectors and the terminals for corrosion. If the connectors are corroded they should be replaced.

Inspect the filter screen where the supply line connects. Remove any debris or deposits that may have built up using a toothbrush, or warm running water. If you cannot clear the clog, it will be necessary to replace the valve (the filter is not removable on most inlet valves).

Test the water inlet valve for continuity using a multimeter. Set the multimeter to the ohms setting X100 (if available, otherwise use the nearest ohm setting). Place a probe on each terminal. the multimeter should display a reading of 200 to 500 ohms. Close inspection of the inlet valve and especially the coil may reveal the exact ohm resistance rating to test for. If the water inlet valve does not pass this test, it should be replaced.

Now. If the inlet valve is operational, and it has passed the above inspection, this will lead to a faulty inlet switch. This will be located, and mounted on the ice maker module board. First you must make sure of the design. Most ice maker control sectors are the module type and some are the traditional type. the traditional type is refereed to as a component ice maker. These are easier to work on. They have the gear components exposed, just behind the face plate. Modular units have holes in the module's face plate for test probes. If you see several holes, each marked with a letter, it is a modular unit. These are not serviceable. You will need to replace the entire module, if this is your type. The inlet switch is not accessible. The ejector motor, and mold heater are the only components that can be tested on a module style ice maker.

To determine which model you have, Remove the outer face plate. If there is a knob, pull it off first, then pry off the face plate with a small screwdriver. If it is a component style ice maker, follow the procedure below to test the inlet switch. if it is a module type, simply replace the entire ice maker. it is not repairable, due to the fact that the inlet switch is not accessible.

component ice maker inlet inspection procedure:(unplug the unit before attempting this inspection)

First you will need to Remove the entire ice maker form the unit. The unit is usually mounted to the freezer case by two or more screws. Remove the bottom screws first. While supporting the ice maker, Remove the remaining top screws. Unplug the ice maker from the freezer cabinet if you have not already done so already. Just along the the edge, nearest the shutoff arm, a pin protrudes through the mounting plate. The arm pin has a spring under the mounting plate. Reduce the tension on the spring by moving the shutoff arm into the "on" position, down, against the ice maker structure.

the inlet switch is located on the mounting plate, near the cam. the inlet switch is mounted on a thin plastic insulator and can be differentiated from the holding switch which sits on a thick spacer. the inlet switch also uses only two wires, while the holding switch uses three. Remove the switch by removing the two screws that hold it in place. The switch is connected by two wires. Label the wire placement on the switch before disconnecting the wires. The wires are connected to the switch with slip-on connectors.Firmly pull the connectors off of the switch terminals NOTE_ If the connectors are corroded, try to clean them. if the connectors cant be cleaned, simply, replace them.

Now, it is time for the testing section of the procedure.Test the switch for continuity using a multimeter. Set the multimeter to the ohms setting X1. Touch one probe to the side terminal and the second probe to each of the other terminals. The reading should be zero on one terminal and infinite on the other. Now, repeat the test while depressing the switch, the readings should now be the reversed. If the switch fails the test, it should be replaced.

* NOTE_ If you have the component type, i would verify motor functions, as well. Test the motor for continuity using a multimeter. Set the multimeter to the ohms setting X10. Touch one probe to the wire from the wire cap. Touch the other probe to each of the two other wires in turn. The reading should be between infinity and zero for each wire.If the motor test results in a zero or infinity reading on either wire, the motor should be replaced.

SOURCE: The automatic ice maker quit working, but first

I removed the wiring connectors from the two water control valves and when I reconnected the wires for the ice maker I heard the unit cycle. When I checked the ice maker, the ice maker shutoff arm was now completely down, operational position. Previously, I could see that the arm was up, but not at the top of the cycle. I'm not sure what caused the ice maker to cycle, but I am assuming that there was corrosion on the wiring connectors which was wiped off when unplugging/replugging the connectors.

Ice maker stopped dispensing

Refrigerator - Icemaker Not Dispensing,or Not Making Ice Check that the feeler arm on the icemaker is in the down position and is not blocked. If the icemaker does not have a feeler arm make sure the icemaker paddle is not blocked under the icemaker. For more information on the causes of new icemakers not making ice. For more information on normal ice production. Side by Side models: The filter may be loaded with sediment that can cause low water pressure. The water pressure must be between 40 and 120 psi. Pressures below 40 psi may cause a malfunction of the icemaker (i.e. producing hollow cubes or no ice production). Test the water pressure: Dispense water from the dispenser into a large measuring cup for 20 seconds. If the measuring cup contains less than 13.5 ounces (400 metric centimeters), the water flow is inadequate. If the amount of water is less than 13.5 ounces then the refrigerator fails the test, remove the filter and test the refrigerator again with the by-pass plug in place. If the refrigerator dispenses the proper amount of water with the by-pass plug in place, then the filter should be replaced. If you no longer have the by-pass plug and it has been over three months since the filter has been replaced, you should replace the filter. If the refrigerator fails the test again and you know you have the proper water pressure in your home, you should call service to check the refrigerator. If the amount of water collected is over 13.5 ounces then the refrigerator passes the test and the dispenser is working correctly. Ice not Dispensing Due To Clumping Ice: Your dispenser may not be dispensing due to clumping ice cubes. The ice cubes in your icemaker may be clumping for a couple of reasons: Low food load: The defrost cycle radiates heat into the freezer. The ice in the freezer will naturally absorb the heat. This will cause the ice to melt slightly during defrost, then eventually freeze together in clumps. Increasing the food load in the freezer will buffer the warmth from the defrost cycle and keeps the ice from melting. Lack of use: When the ice bin is full, the pressure from the weight of the cubes can cause the bottom cubes to fuse and clump. To prevent this from happening, discard the clumped ice and check the bin periodically to ensure the ice is not building up. If you do not use a large amount of ice, move the feeler arm on the icemaker to the up position to turn off the icemaker and stop ice production. For more information on the causes of clumping cubes. If the ice bucket is not seated correctly, ice will not dispense properly. Make sure the ice bucket is in the correct position. Refer to Use & Care manual.

How to make the ice maker work

Problems with Ice Maker/Water Dispenser
If you are not getting ice, make sure the water valve is open and the ice shutoff switch or arm is not in the "Off"
position. Inspect the ice ejector arm for blockage and remove any trapped ice with a plastic spoon. If you recently
emptied the ice container, remember that it takes your refrigerator up to 24 hours to produce ice.
Low water pressure is the major cause of problems with the water/ice door dispenser. Low water pressure can cause
inadequate water flow and small or hollow ice cubes. Check the water line for kinks that may interfere with water
flow and make sure the water valve is open. A dirty water filter can color the water and ice cubes, impede water
flow or cause water to have an off taste so remove, clean and replace it.
If water is leaking from the door dispenser, make sure the water glass remains under the spout until the water
shuts off completely. If you recently changed the water filter, air that was left in the line may cause water to
spurt from the dispenser. To flush the water line, let water run from the dispenser for approximately three minutes
or until you draw out 1.5 gallons of water. Try to find a container that will fit under the dispenser spout so you
do not have to start and stop to empty the container.

Have a nice day my friend : )

Ice maker not making ice. There is no jam and all swithes are in the on position. I think a hose has disconnected, where can I find the hose to check it

Icemaker not working: Check the shutoff arm, the shutoffarm fails to move upward when the ice bucket is full. Check the water pressure. If thereis not enough pressure, the ice maker will not have enough water to make ice.Ifwater flow pressure is good, check solenoid valve activate and also it'scleaned. Locate your ice maker, remove theice bucket. Pull the cover off the end of the ice maker. Locate the holes "V"and "L". Take a paper clip (jump clip) and tape. Straight the clip and put tapein middle. Hold the taped side and insert the clip into "V" and "L". This sendsthe power to water valve. If water goes into ice-maker, water valve is good. Ifnotreplace solenoid. Check thefreezer temperature. The proper freezer temperature should be around 5 degrees. The warmer it is in the freezer, the more difficult it is to make ice. thanks, helpful?

Ice maker does not work

Hi,
The first step you need to do is to turn the water off to the refrigerator so it quits making until you get it fixed.
If your fridge has the control boards in each side of the freezer cabinet that controls the icemaker, then you have a failed board. If you have a standard icemaker with the metal shutoff arm then you have a failed motor module in the icemaker. You can remove the icemaker and unplug the wiring connector from it so you can leave the water on to the dispenser.

The ice maker in my whirlpool gold refrigerator Model No, GR2FHTXTBOO, is not working.

Hello jitkagardner,
Welcome

You said, The ice maker in my whirlpool gold refrigerator Model No, GR2FHTXTBOO, is not working.

How old is the fridge?
When have you last changed the water filter.
Should be down below at the front grille!
Try these tasks!

If the ice maker is not producing ice or not enough ice
Refrigerator connected to a water supply and the supply
shutoff valve turned on? Connect refrigerator to water
supply and turn water shutoff valve fully open.
• Kink in the water source line? A kink in the line can reduce
water flow. Straighten the water source line.
• Ice maker turned on? Make sure wire shutoff arm or switch
(depending on model) is in the ON position.
• New installation? Wait 24 hours after ice maker installation
for ice production to begin. Wait 72 hours for full ice
production.
• Freezer door closed completely? Firmly close the freezer
compartment door. If the freezer compartment door will not
close all the way, see "The doors will not close completely."
• Large amount of ice recently removed? Allow 24 hours for
ice maker to produce more ice.
• Ice cube jammed in the ice maker ejector arm?
Remove ice from the ejector arm with a plastic utensil.
• Water filter installed on the refrigerator? Remove filter and
operate ice maker. If ice volume improves, then the filter may
be clogged or incorrectly installed. Replace filter or reinstall it
correctly.
• Reverse osmosis water filtration system connected to
your cold water supply? This can decrease water pressure.

Icemaker won't dispense whole cubes, only chopped ice

Hello chitwnchk1
Welcome to Fixya,

You said,It chops ice when dispensing but won't just dispense whole cubes.
Any suggestions on how to fix it?

1. If the cubes dispense, but not whole cubes, there is not a enough water pressure.
2. r there is a restriction in the water line to the ice maker.
3. OR the fridge may not be level.
4. Is there a water filter and has it been Changed in the past 6 months?

Here are 4 reasons mentioned in the repair manual.

Shutoff arm in the off position

Ensure the shutoff arm is down and not in the raised position. If in the raised the position, the ice maker is in the off position and will not cycle.

Faulty Harvest Thermostat

There is a thermostat inside the ice maker that will close when the ice maker mold reaches the proper temperature. If the thermostat is not closing, the ice maker will not cycle.

Freezer To Warm
The ice maker will not cycle if the temperature in the freezer in not below 12 degrees. Ensure proper temperature in freezer.

No water getting to ice maker
The water inlet valve is the control device that allows water to enter the ice maker. It is energized during the last 5-8 seconds of the harvest cycle. During this 5 to 8 second period, there should be 110v across the two wires connected to the valve . If there is power supplied to the valve and the valve does not open to allow water to flow, the valve is defective.

However, if power is being supplied to the valve and water is flowing through it freely, it could be that you water supply line or inlet tube have frozen solid. These can be thawed with warm water or a hair dryer.

Let me know how it goes and what you found!
