SOURCE: ICE MAKER QUIT MAKING ICE ON MY WHIRLPOOL FRIDGE
I had a Whirlpool Model GD5SHAXNS in which the icemaker quit working about the same time (3 years old). I had water out the dispenser, I found that it was the icemaker itself failed not calling for water to fill it. I replaced it with a icemaker on-line for about $100 and problem fixed. I have been told his is a common problem with the icemaker in this model ref.

You definitely have something wrong with the ice maker if the water has turned to ice Schmerold. And the IM is not harvesting. The way it works is the IM needs 28 degrees F to harvest. If the coils below in the condenser are dirty the IM won't try to harvest. The Ice Mold thermostat is mounted on the firewall of the Ice mold in its own little cubby whole. To access it you will need to remove the head. Then remove the shell separating the Ice mold from the heads housing. There you will find the ice mold thermostat. It's only function is to get it on. If the temperature is right in the freezer. To test this precious thermostat one needs only to stick it into a freezer and let it hang out for an hour or so. Then grab it and check it for continuity. If it is open it has failed and belongs in the file 13. It is easily replaced and inexpensive.
On your model, ice maker operation is controlled by an optical sensor mounted on both sides of the freezer liner. The usual failure of this model is a bad emitter board, located in one of these recesses. You may view the service instructions for checking this sensor.

The water valve has 2 solenoids one for water and another for ice. The water solenoid is connected to a larger hose than the icemaker solenoid. The water solenoid is working but the Ice maker solenoid might be dead. BUT the ice maker might not be calling for water. It is the ice maker that powers up the solenoid to fill the ice mold. At the end of harvest a tiny copper plate mounted behind the main drive gear rubs across a copper contact. To tweek the amount of water a small screw is mount at the 3 oclock position of the ice maker head.HERE are some repair tips and photos

If you have water sitting in the trays and no action is happening, then i suggest replacing the ice maker complete as these spares are pricey and take a while to get to you , (In the hope that they are correct). On some units there is a small test button. If you have one, push or switch it to activate icemaker. Often this resetting brings the ice maker back on line.
