John Deere hydro 185 When I try to start tractor it just clicks once then I return the key to off and try again with the same result. If I move the fly wheel around I will eventaually get it to start but only sometimes. The mower runs great once it starts. Are there any safety switches invovled in the start sequence beyond the brake and deck on?
You have a bad disk in the starter solenoid pull the starter and go to a shop and buy a new solenoid or flip the disk in the solenoid and sand the two contacts so that it will make contact.
Bruce and Shawn are most likely correct. I would add a few others possible causes I have encountered with my own 185.
The first time, my issue was a corroded fuse holder behind the cowl. I changed out the fuse holder & added a new fuse which fixed the problem for awhile. The second time, I found the problem was the key switch itself. When cranking the starter, if you turned the key all the way, it would click as yours does, but not start. I found that if I turned the key all the way to the crank position but backed off slightly, the engine would crank and then run when the key was released to the run position. A new key switch fixed this problem. The tractor still runs great to this day.
