Tractor starts very easy when it is cold, but if it is used for 20min or so then turned off or stalled, (If it gets too hot, it will cut out and die on its own too) it will not start again until it cools off for about 1 hour or so. I have been told by others that it could be a bad coil (12 volt square can type / front mount on top of distributor). Any suggestions would be helpful.
Details:
1949 8N with front mount distributor.
- Good spark when cold.
- looks to have an Intermittent spark when hot.
- plugs are NOT wet when it will not start.
- Carburetor, Fuel tank and fuel line just rebuilt / replaced or cleaned. (all are working correctly)
- 12Volt conversion on tractor
Thanks
This sounds like a bad fuel pump to me. The only way to be sure is to check the fuel pressure when cold, probably around 45 PSI. Then when it get hot it will drop way down to 10 or 15 PSI. Check the pressure if you can, or change the fuel pump.

If it cranks over it's not .....too hot.
Stops on it's own?.........sure sounds like a coil.
Put a cheap timing light on one of the wires....leave it on and drive it until it dies and watch the light for spark(light).
Or while cranking....hook the light on and check for spark.
You have to detect if there's spark or not.
Stick a old plug on one of the wires when cranking with a no start and check it.....we want the same spark as cold.
Does your 12 volt coil require a resistor to keep it from overheating? Maybe?
Throw one inline before the coil from a pre electronic ignition Dodge....that should take the edge off but still run great.
You may have to replace the points now if the resistor helps.....they may be burnt from high voltage......they don't like pure 12 volts.
Replace coil on your 8n coil works when its cold the secandary winding shorts when it gets hot
