Whe I run the mixer at stir and low speeds it makes a sputtering sound like a car enginge that is misfiring
SOURCE: Mixer does not function at
Remove the brushes. Two black screws, one on each side. Pay close attention to orientation. MUST INSERT THE SAME EXACT WAY! Use electrical contact cleaner. I said electrical contact cleaner, put the WD40 back in the drawer!!! Using electrical contact cleaner, clean the contacts. Now clean them again, now repeat two or three more times. Spray SOME, meaning a little, into each hole. Reassemble and try it out. If this does not fix the problem refer to the section on removing the cover to access the motor and gears. disassemble clean the motor's brush surface and the contacts. if you don't know what I'm talking about then stop and call a pro.
This is a very common reaccuring problem with these things. Especially when meat grinding or cookie doughing with it. If you move to replace, get a stronger model, like the 500 or the 600. No, I do not sit around repairing mixers all day. I just happen to know a lot about the ones my wife has destroyed. Some two or even three times. after a while it pays to go get the right equipement.

I would recommend that you first check the Hall Effect sensor
which determines the mixer’s speed. I had this exact problem and I
actually went out and bought another Hall sensor for about $13. I
replaced the original sensor and made sure that the connection between the
sensor and control board was nice and snug. My mixer worked as good as new! But
I was curious to know if my original sensor was defective, so I put it back in
mixer and again made sure all of the connections were snug and tight. Guess what?
My original sensor also made my mixer work! There was nothing wrong
with the original Hall Effect sensor except that the connection between the control
board and sensor was not tight--unfortunately I didn't check the connection
before I decided to buy another sensor. My guess is that the connection between
the control board and the sensor probably loosens or comes undone over time
from use and vibrations. To fix your problem:
1. Download the mixer
parts and diagrams from the Kitchenaid website to see
what the Hall Effect sensor looks like. BTW the part number is 9703312.
2. You'll need a phillips head screwdriver to open up the
mixer gear case cover.
3. Make sure that the connection between the control board
and sensor is absolutely tight and snug.
4. Also, make sure that the orientation of the sensor is
correct. It's difficult to tell which
way the sensor should be connected because the control board has three prongs
and the sensor can attach facing up or down. After you've made the connection,
run the mixer. If it still doesn't work, disconnect the sensor, reconnect it
with the prongs facing the opposite direction and try it again. I
actually found the right sensor orientation through a little trial and error.
But by going through this trial and error, I also had my Eureka moment when I realized that the
original sensor probably would also work if it were reconnected with correct
orientation.
5. This whole process probably takes about 10-15 minutes
to perform.
6. Finally, use your common sense
and make sure to unplug the mixer before checking, connecting or disconnecting
anything.

Pull the back off and there will be two screws at the top of the Speed Control Plate and a 3rd screw at the bottom. Tighten the top two screws down. [email protected]. Let me know if it works.

STOP!!!!! Chris do not take out the brushes yet!!!! The problem could be the machine timing is off, and that requires a flat head and Philips head screw driver and a bit of patience. You will need to remove the back round cover and adjust one two or three screws that you will see in a triangle pattern (upside down pattern) the top right will be the place to start. The Phillips screw driver is used to loosen the screw that holds the rear round cover on, take the little screw all the way out . now grab the rear cover on the sides and while pulling back AND UP at the same time the cover will come off, it should not take a great deal of pressure to remove it , if you pull straight back you will break off two little clips on the inside bottom of the cover so remember that while you are pulling back to also pull up and maybe some gentle wiggling to remove the cover. Now you will see a very dusty dirty inside of the mixer , if it has never been cleaned before , no matter if you have a can of air (used for computers) you can use it to blow off some of the flour dust , you wil also see a Black and Copper plate with three screws in it, two at top and one at bottom center, the one at the top right is where you will start. These instructions are for very carefull directions, the three screws are the timing mechanism used by Hobart and Whirlpool to set the proper timing on the K5SS and going crazy will or could render the mixer inoperable so a little goes a long way, also you are now in the electrical contact area of the mixer and touching parts with a screwdriver can short out the speed control plate the motor or EVEN GIVE YOU A SUBSTANTIAL SHOCK, so proceed at your own risk, with that said lots of people have done this and have had no ill effects on body or machine , turn the machine on and turn the top right screw a little 1,8th turn either right or left the sound of the sputtering should increase or decrease if it increases turn it back to the original position and then back the other way an 1/8th turn, When I said you need to be patient it is becase the adjustments are made by ear unless you have some timing equipment the KA techs use. So be patient. Now if the sputtering does not stop or increase or decrease then return the top right screw to it's original position and move to the left screw and try that one, I assure you that you will notice a decernable differance in the sputtering from either one or both screws. Do not move the bottom screw as it is the adjuster for high speeds above six, Get back to me if this does not correct the problem, the brushes are not the problem here but cleaning them is not a bad idea as the K5SS was made between 1978 and 1986 if it is a Hobart and between 1986 and 2002 if it is a Whirlpool so cleaning them wouldn't hurt but as stated below the brushes must go back in a specific way or your machine will not work at all, There are four ways to insert the brushes and only one way will work. Let us know how you fair or contact us for more help Thats why we are here
Cleaned the mixer brushes and connections and got the motor to work. Tried to turn the srcews and managed to get the motor to run better and thought all was great. When i move the speed lever to the higher speeds there really doesn't seem to be a change in speed. Could this be a control boad issue? If so, when i replace it would I have to mess with turning the screws to get the speed correct?
