I have an Electrolux Fridgidaire FRX26HF9DS5, the freezer is not keeping things frozen. I can't get a service appt for 2 weeks so want to try to diagnose myself. Any insight? Thanks, Beth

several things but this first.......

  • Slowly pull your fridge/freezer unit out from the wall and then turn the power off.
  • If the condenser coils unit has a cover over it, remove it.
  • Once you have access to the condenser coils, check if they are dirty or covered in frost. If dirty, clean them with a vacuum cleaner and damp cloth. If frosted over, leave your refrigerator turned off until defrosted.
  • Once the condenser coils are clean and/or defrosted, turn your fridge back on and check if it now freezes correctly.

Freezer only gets down to around 18 degrees but fridge is fine. No frost on the freezer evaporator fan is running

Modern consumer refrigerators only have coils in the freezer. In the lower back of the freezer there is a small fan and possible a damper (flap that opens/closes) to push cold air from the freezer to the refrigerator. Given that the freezer is 18 deg, it's probably cold enough to keep the fridge area at typically 34 deg.
So the cooling system (compressor, coils, thermostat) are not working properly to keep the freezer at, typically 0 deg. Possible causes: partial loss of refrigerant gas, icing around evaporator coils (in freezer), compressor failing, dust clogging condenser coils (under fridge), condenser fan clogged or broken (under fridge), thermostat failure.
I'd start with condenser. Remove the slotted trim at the bottom front and look in with a flashlight. Are the coils clean? Pull out the fridge and remove the lower back cover (usually cardboard). You can now see the coils and fan. Clean and blow them out.
If it's icing, it probably means freezer door not closing tight. If auto-defrost not working properly it would probably get worse over the period of a few days so not likely.

Condenser fan not turning. Placed a house fan behind the fridge and the freezer got cold. But .... fridge not cold. ??

Condenser fans are usually not difficult to replace. Clean the condenser coils, too.

Refigerator runs but does not get cold

Check the fridge's temperature or thermostat control to confirm that it was not accidentally turned up.
Inspect the appliance's door seals to ensure that they are not cracked or have come loose.
lean the fridge's condenser coils. Condenser coils displace hot air from the refrigerator by drawing heat away from the appliance with a fan. Vacuum the condenser coils to remove any dust and dirt accumulated on them, then use warm, soapy water and a clean cloth to clean the condenser coils of any remaining debris. Examine the drain line, located under the refrigerator, if above does not fix it , it may be low on freon, or there is a hole in a line.

GE refrigerator Model GTS18FBSARWW Don't have manual, as it came w/the condo. Don't know how to clean the coils or how to get to them, either. Thanks.

The condenser coil is located underneath the refrigerator on most models. YOu can access it from the front, or in some cases, in the rear. To access it from the rear, after pulling it away from the wall, you will have to remove the machine compartment cover screws and the cover itself. If it is the type i believe it is, it is called a no-clean condenser, but they still need occasional cleaning. It will be a barrel shaped condenser on the right side of the machine compartment. A good refrigerator tip for anyone looking to clean the condenser is to make sure you turn the fridge off or unplug before cleaning it.

    Fridge comes on frequently.

The best thing to do is pull it away from the wall. Get the back bottom cover off (probably, card board). Get a good vacuum and clean the condenser coil of any dust....Getting the condenser coil as clean as possible, then replacing the fan motor would be your best option to get the fridge to run quieter and less frequent.
