Sounds like the wiring has shorted that connects to the compressor. Shut the power off and remove the cover to the compressor terminals. You should see what you are looking for.

1998 Duo-therm Brisk Air compressor not coming on. Smelled of burnt electrical when first happened. How do I check to see what the problem is?

Burnt smell is not a good sign. If your compressor is not turning and the clixon does not shut off power you will hear a humming sound and start smelling as unit burns it self up. Chances are your compressor has seized and needs to be replaced.

Why does engine shutter with burnt rubber smell?

You may have an accessory locking up, like your A/C compressor. Remove your serpentine and check for any binding of the accessory pulleys or a bad tensioner or idler. Also, check for a ground in the positive side of the charging system. Do you see any smoke coming from the engine when this occurs?

A smell of burning rubber is coming from my engine. What is it? Could it be the timing belt? Is it safe to drive any distance? Thanks I have a burning rubber smell in my Subaru 2003 Outback, - any...

Check serpentine belt, the radidator hose , the air conditioner compressor and also the differential seal they common cause for rubber smell.

Check for any rubber part that can be in contact with exhaust system and inspect wirings looking for shorts.

Also ensure that the smell is not coming from a bad tyre, and check for oil leaks in your engine, burnt oil can be confused with rubbere smell.

Overheating? burnt oil smell

There is a seal between the compressor and the motor that in failed condition will leak oil into motor windings causing burnt oil smell. Some hitachi compressors suffered from failed valves or head gasket causing extra heat but not oil smell. These compressors also have a thermobreaker built into the windings that when failed will prevent motor from starting or would start and run for only a few moments then open. This part is not replaceable. enjoy

Towels smell burnt after washing.

Are you sure the burnt smell is coming from the washer and not from the dryer? If you've placed a rubber backed rug or other similar article of clothing, it is not uncommon for that rubber backing to melt and get embedded in the heated duct of the dryer . Not sure this helps but if you can clarify the point at which the burnt smell is first observed that would help..
Thanks
