There is an inch thick vertical stripe down left side of the screen
SOURCE: Red Stripe, right side
Follow-up. I found the slip on which the LG tech wrote down the part number for the board to fix the vertical red stripe. I was mistaken in my previous post. It was not the Z-Drive board. The board you want is:
X DRIVE BOARD; Part 6871QRH043A
Type in the part number in a search engine and yuo will find multiple places to purchase. Ebay may be the cheapest. That's where I got another part which got my picture back. I did not buy this part myself because now that I have my picture back, I do not want to screw it up, so I live with the red stripe.

This is a problem with your control board. For some reason, the resistors on this board become "Un-Soldered" I'm not sure how handy you are but this can be fixed. BE SURE TO EITHER DISCHARGE THE CAPACITORS, OR AVOID THEM ALL TOGETHER (Capacitors look like little cans. They have what looks like an "X" or a "+" on the top.) Capacitors can hold a charge for a long period of time. Here is a link on how to fix this issue. I hope this helps you.

You can still use the freeze spray Donald mentioned to cause the fault to come back once it is gone.Using this stuff carefully and allowing each component to 'soak' for 20-30 seconds before hitting another should allow you to narrow it down.
If it is in fact one of the board-edge parts of the display (which it could well be), the whole display may be the only 'part' LG will replace and you will shudder when learning the cost of it.
If you do find the right part or area and it is the display, you might try the site below to save some bucks; this company buys overruns and parts out units:
