The washer beeps 3 times on any button press but does nothing else. I cannot get it into service mode since no buttons respond except with 3 beeps. I have left the machine unplugged for 30 minutes but that does not help. I have also tried unplugging and holding the start button down for 5 seconds. Still no change. Sometimes, when plugged in it beeps randomly.

I don't know if your machine is the Neptune series. If it is, there is a culprit called the wax motor in the door switch assembly that shorts out and fries the r11 resistor on the control circuit board. This could cast as much as $250 to replace the wax motor and control circuit board. It may be better to look for a new machine if it is many years old. If not, you may be able to justify such expensive repairs.

If your washer doesn't seem to work at all, check these:
No power
Lid switch
No power
Check to see whether power is getting to the washing machine. Is it plugged in? Has a fuse blown or is a circuit breaker tripped?
Lid switch
If the lid switch is defective, your washer can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washer to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.
Some machines have a special lid-switch fuse near the lid switch, inside the control panel. If this fuse blows, the unit won't fill with water until you replace the fuse.

There is a door locking unit that should lock when you press go. This must have failed. It lives just under the lid in the middle at the front. It is thermal piston, when you press go it gets power and extends. When it hits a micro switch that tels the washer the door is shut and allows it to continue, else it shuts down. To get at it you have to take the front off, leave the door on.
