Skap, the question is whether the evaporator coils are completely frosted up or just the top section. Frigidaire has had a lot of issues with restrictions which would cause just freezing on the top half. I will attach some pictures. Your unit has an adaptive defrost. I believe that you can advance it into defrost by pressing the light switch 5 or 6 times. If you pull the bottom grill, there should be a tech sheet with the instructions behind it. Usually when this adaptive defrost unit fails, you will not have a freezer fan, for it runs through this adaptive defrost board. Your heaters are calrod and usually do not fail. They can become unplugged due to ice build-up. You can check to see if you have 120V getting to them after putting the unit into defrost. If not, check the defrost thermostat (bi-metal). If it's bulged, it's usually a bad sign. Defrost the unit with a hair dryer while unplugged. You have to remove the back freezer panel to get at the bi-metal, defrost the unit and check the drain pan.

Did you replace the timer with the correct one for your refrigerator? If so you may need to check the defrost thermostat out.

Sounds like a shorted heater. You advanced manully, unit runs till timer goes to defrost. Timer contacts switch, defrost heater shorted trips breaker.

Sounds like a bad timer to me. Forget the tstat. Power comes from the power cord and goes directly to the tstat. The tstat sends the power to the timer where it is directed to either the compressor or defrost heaters as needed.
Recheck your plug connector to the timer carefully. I have installed many timers that did not work, or work right, right out of the box.
As well, to cover yourself, I would replace the defrost tstat which is located behind the rear panel in the freezer compartment.
It's a small round disk clipped to the top of the cooling coil, and is the component that is by far, the component that fails most often.
Check the connections to the main heater as well, while your in there.

Brown patch in linoleum, water leakage possibly from refrigerator. NO ICEMAKER. Is it possible condensation leak from freezer?
Check defrost cycle. It's not perfect. Resulting to over frosting around freezer and it clogs drain line. And also check the drain hose no tints or kinks by which drain water flow blocked..
But main reason is only due to defrost cycling malfunction.

It's common problem. You have to check Defrost timer, thermostat and defrost heater. Any one malfunction, you will get over frosting. How to check?

Where would i locate defrost timer on my ge bottom freezer refrigerator
Older fridges use a defrost timer to control when the fridge goes into defrost. Yours is a newer model and uses a control module which controls all of the fridge's functions including defrost timing. It does not have a defrost timer. It cost around $150. But I would check the defrost element first. A lot of problems with the defrost are usually a burnt out heating element. Use a meter and check that the element is not electrically open.

WHERE IS THE DEFROST TIMER LOCATED ?
Hi

The defrost timer is sometimes found behind the front grill of the refrigerator. It may also be found behind a cover plate inside the refrigerator or freezer, in the temperature control console, or behind the refrigerator near the compressor.
The timer is usually held in place with one or more screws. Remove the screws and gently pull the timer out far enough to disconnect the wiring connector.
Locate the timer switch and turn it clockwise until you hear it click. One click and the refrigerator shuts off = defrost mode, second click the compressor and fans come back on = run/cooling mode.
*Some defrost timers are a constant or continuous run timer, which means when ever the refrigerator is plugged in the defrost timer is powered up and running. Some defrost timers are an accumulative run timer, which means when the refrigerator is off the defrost timer is off and not running, when the refrigerator is running the defrost timer is running. This is also sometimes called a demand defrost. The power for the defrost timer goes through the cold control first on an accumulative defrost system. The timers are often the same but will be wired differently to get the different operations.

The above URL will take you to an exploded view of the controls. Look at number 23 which will be located behind toe plate below door on the left side. That is the defrost timer. Rotate the clutch head screw Clockwise SLOWLY until you hear a loud click. That is the defrost timer starting the defrost. If the unit restarts after 18-22 minutes and defrost does not take place you problem is most likely the defrost thermostat.

I have side by side refig model GSS25JFMCWW.I have to manually defrost by shutting off refrig.This model has defrost cycle,what would cause this cycle not to work?
Defective defrost timer, heaters, or defrost thermostat. Locate the defrost timer, rotate the dial (clutch head screw) clockwise SLOWLY until you hear one click. That puts the timer in defrost. Wait 25-30 minutes and the defrost should happen. Normally the timer will shift back to the cooling mode after 18-22 minutes. If it does not restart after the 30 minutes your problem is the defrost timer. Rotate the dial SLOWLY a little more and it should go back into the cooling mode. If you followed the above instructions and did not get a defrost the problem is in the heaters or defrost thermostat.
