My Whirlpool top loading washer will not agitate, but it will spin. There was an electrical or rubber smell at first. I had replaced the "dogs" just recently and was elated to fix that problem myself and it had been working fine after that. I don't remember the year, but I'm guessing I bought it in the late 80's, maybe 87 or 88. Could be newer, but it's so long ago I can't remember. It will go through the time and complete the cycle, but with no agitation. Is this the coupler or maybe even a motor?
Thanks so much

If the washer won't finish a spin cycle, it probably means that your timer went bad or stalled. You can take the control panel off and look at the contacts for scorching or corrosion.

To disassemble, you need to destroy the tabs that are holding the translucent thing to the four post on top of the bottom part. This of course means that the translucent thing needs to be replaced too. I hammered the screwdriver into the tabs until they gave way. The rest of teh parts come out undamaged.
(if you have snips with really long handles, that would be a better tool).
