The region code, which in some languages is referred to as a "country code", usually appears on the back of DVD cases toward the bottom, and may be represented merely as a number or as a number within a stylized or squashed globe. The region code refers to a geographic region of the world rather than the language of the DVD
0-
Region code "0" is an informal way of saying that all region codes are set, which is equivalent to the absence of a region code. There is not really a region code "0".
1-USA and Canada (not Mexico or Greenland)
2-Western Europe, the Middle East, South Africa, and Japan
3-Southeast Asia
4-Central and South America and Oceania
5-Africa, India, and countries of the Former Soviet Union
6-Mainland China

Australia is DVD-region 4:
DVD-Region codes and countries Region code Area FREE Informal term meaning "worldwide". Region 0 is not an official setting; discs that bear the region 0 symbol either have no flag set or have regions 1-6 flags set. Region 0 is commonly referred to as "Region Free", especially when talking about DVD and Blu-ray Disc players. 0 1 United States, Canada, Bermuda, Caribbean, U.S. territories 2 Europe, Middle East, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Greenland, British Overseas Territories, British Crown Dependencies, French Overseas departments and territories 3 Southeast Asia, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau 4 South America, Central America, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea and much of Oceania 5 Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Africa (exceptEgypt, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho), Central Asia, Mongolia, North Korea 6 China 7 Reserved for future use, MPAA-related DVDs and "media copies" of pre-releases in Asia 8 International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, spacecraft, etc. 9 These region discs have all eight flags set, allowing the disc to be played in any location, on any player. How can I change the region settings on my Sony DAV DZ870W many thanks, Shane

When a DVD disc is created, it is encoded with a "Region number." The disc will only play on DVD players with the same Region number - for instance, a Region 3 disc won't play on a Region 1 player.
Region 1: U.S. and U.S. Territories, Canada
Region 2: Japan, Western Europe, Middle East, South Africa
Region 3: South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast and East Asia Region 4: New Zealand, Australia, Pacific Islands, Mexico, Central/
South America
Region 5: Russia and the former Soviet Union, Africa, Indian
subcontinent, North Korea Region 6: China
The only way to get around the region codes, is to rip a DVD to your computer and remove the region code. Then burn the DVD to a DVD R. There are programs around on the net, but I'm not sure it is legal in all countries.
Google for the programs.
A DVD player sometimes allows you to change the region code once. But it not even would allow you to switch back after you changed it once.

Can't play uk DVD in Australia

To changethe Region code on your DVD player, open Control Panel - System - Hardware -Device manager, and click on DVD/CD ROM drives, then right click on the DVDdrive and click Properties then click on DVD Region.
You can enter a new region and it also shows you how many changes have beenmade.
NOTE you can make only 4 changes and the player will lock permanently on the4th change. Region 4 = Australia
If you want to play DVDs from any region you maybe able to upgrade the firmwareto make it region free BUT if you make a mistake or installed the wrongfirmware the player will be a piece of junk.
The best solution to make the player region free is to install a piece ofsoftware (Passkey for DVD) that allows you to play DVDs from any region andPasskey for Blu-ray that allows you to play Blu-rays from any region. There areseveral available on the Internet but my favourite is DVD-Region Free From: -

What region is the DVD player that comes with the new TEAC TV that I bought? I can't find the info on the manual or the internet. Please help. I live in Australia. Thanks.

It depends if the DVD player is separate to the TV or built into it. Assuming the DVD is a separate unit, it must be region 4 for Australia, unless specified otherwise (on the player's rear panel or in the operation manual). The only types of DVD players/recorders allowable in Australia are region 4, and multi-region. If the player plays region 4 DVDs, but not other regions, there's your answer. A model number and/or brand of the DVD player would help.

Have an aussie ps3 trying 2 play dvd and it says region code incorrect how do i fix this

The PS3s' DVD and Blu-Ray player is region locked. This means that your Australian PS3 can only play DVD and Blu-Ray movies made for the region Australia is in or are region free (region code 0).

For DVD's, Australia is region code 4.
For Blu-Ray, Australia is region code B or region code 2.

Although this doesn't help your current problem, the PS3 is region free for PS3 games (you can play games from any region).

To work around this, I propose either ripping the DVD to your computer, then burning it onto a different DVD or streaming the DVD directly from your computer to the PS3. Streaming is definitely the better bet if you have more DVD's from another region.

To rip and burn your own copy, use a blank DVD disc and DVD burning/ripping software such as Nero.

To stream to your PS3, check out the following:
PS3 Media Server (my personal favorite) for PC
TVersity for PC
MediaLink for Mac

Enjoy your movie (hopefully)!

I am in australia and play region 4 dvds I want to but a region 1 dvd will it play?

HELLO

Not if your machine is locked to Region 4! It's possible there may be a region hack for your machine, have a look on www.videohelp.com and go to the hacks section.

To see if it will play try to borrow a region 1 disc. If it does not play, then you'll only be able to play Region 4 discs only.
