Ive bought Western Digital Caviar 16 MB cache 500GB SATA II HDD. I want to use it as a storage disk in combination with my Maxtor 160 GB IDE harddisk. I have connected new HDD with SATA data cable and power cable but it was not found by WINDOWS XP. I took a look in bios - it is not even there. According to user guide for my MB it should work as it is, but obviously it is not. Do I need to change any settings in BIOS for using SATA II HDD?
thank you
No but you need to ensure that the drivers for your SATA controller are installed correctly (as they probably are not installed) http://uk.asus.com/products1.aspx?l1=3
Drivers will not affect whether the drive shows up in BIOS or not.
Your BIOS should have a setting under the 'Advanced' section for IDE and or SATA. Usually this needs to be set to 'Enhanced' mode or 'SATA plus PATA' Check your jumper settings-The drive should be set to 'Master' (if it even has jumpers).Check the power lead to make sure the drive spins up. Try different power lead and different SATA cable. If possible, try the drive in another machine to make sure it isn't 'Bad out of the Box'
If the drive does not show up in BIOS its a hardware issue or BIOS setting .
Once it shows up in BIOS - you'll be good to go.
Our system has 2 sata wd caviar 16 drives and one legacy dvd and one legacy 7200 rpm ide drive. The cd is a master on the primary ide port and the legacy hdd is the slave. After t/s a software issue, the drives on the primary ide chain stopped showing up. After many jumper settings and configurations, setting the sata bios setting to BOTH sata and sata + pata worked perfectly. Thanks for the fix.
